So, I just got a new laptop with Vista. It's much more powerful than my old computer, and yet runs FFXI considerably worse. This is old news.
Anyway, I've encountered the odd situation that my new Bluetooth mouse's middle button (clicking the scroll wheel) does not open the menu as it should, although in every other way the mouse works perfectly. The button functions just fine for any other application, so it's clearly not broken. Interestingly, when I plug in my old USB mouse, the middle button still works just fine. All this suggests to me that perhaps something about my new mouse's driver is telling my computer that I'm hitting a different button than the one that opens the menu. Does anyone have a suggestion about how I might go about fixing this? Obviously I can just use the keyboard to open the menu, but I'd rather like to get my mouse functionality back.
My broader problem, incidentally, is that my frame rate slows to a feeble crawl (a few frames per second) any time a bunch of other players are on the screen at once. The frame rate improves just by facing away from them. I lowered the resolution dramatically and the problem persists. If anyone knows a solution to this (unlikely, aside from ditching Vista), or can suggest graphics settings to mitigate the problem (turning down the number of models displayed helps only minimally), I'd welcome the help.
