FFXI and slow network speeds on VistaFollow

#1 Dec 12 2007 at 5:47 PM Rating: Decent
Ok, I have a strange scenario here I was hoping someone could explain.

I have a dual boot laptop, Vista and XP, FFXI is installed on both OSs. FFXI in XP works great, both on my network at home and at my network at work. FFXI in Vista, more or less works at home as well (minus a few nVidia 8400M GS glitches), but here on the network at work, it is SO SLOW. Logging in to the POL viewer takes almost a minute alone.

So judging by this description, I at first thought it had something to do with some Vista settings because it works just fine on XP. But then I realized that XP and Vista both work just fine at home..... could it be some combination of the network settings here at work and some Vista settings? Any insight would be appreciated, thanks!

p.s. No preaching about playing games at work please! :)

hm. Well, i just took the final for my PC Support class (which happened to be teaching vista), so, while i don't use it myself, i know a thing or 2 about it...

Pull up Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center. should have a section on it where it says Network (Private Network) or (Public Network) ...if its set to public, that means Vista is restricting certain network services, for the sake of security. Since work is generally a safe environment, if its set to public, go ahead and set it to private. Simply select the "Customize" link at the end of that line to set it to private.

Also, if you're connecting through a proxy, as most workplaces, schools, universities, etc. do, you might want to verify that proxy options are set in POL (this option is on the login screen)

Hey thanks for the tips, but I just accidentally found out what was causing it. It was my VPN software. I guess the VPN software went crazy when I actually did a local ethernet connection at work, since the VPN program was trying to tunnel to the same site! Funny thing is, regular HTTP request (web browsing) still were fine at work with the VPN software... I wonder what type of fancy shmancy network stuff FFXI does that caused the VPN software to wig out. Another weird thing is, things were still screwed up at work even though the actually VPN connection wasn't connected, the program was only running in the background. Again, all is gone now that VPN is uninstalled.

Also, I want to add that even though FFXI and Vista+VPN seemed to have worked at home, I used to have a stutter in framerates about once every second or so. That is now gone as well since I uninstalled the VPN software.
