My friend owns a PS3. He bought MGS4 recently and started to notice that sometimes, the textures will distort.
Distinctively, on a character's model, they will have a pattern across a seam, like down their arms, or around their head, like this:
|||||||...||||.|.|....|||||.|.||||
Then, tonight, we tried to watch a movie he had downloaded, and it started doing similar patterns across the screen.
So then we threw in a known good DVD that we've watched, without trouble on his PS3, and it started making another pattern across the screen, sort of like green and red squares.
We think something is overheating or has overheated and failed. There's no fan sound that we can hear and a mutual friend of ours said his actually does make a fan noise.
He tried to check for a system update, but it reported that there was none.
So at this point, we're thinking it's probably warranty time. He said he looked online and it gave him the impression that he's going to need his receipt from when he bought it to claim warranty.
A) Has anyone ever had to warranty their PS3 and did they have to have the receipt, or was the S/N enough?
B) Anyone have any idea of stuff he could try? Have you seen this type of thing before?
