As for whether or not WoW is easier, sorry, WoW is easier. It's designed that way. Death is just a corpse run away from eliminating the need for a raise. Stats are all clearly defined and easily visible, with little to no hidden mechanics. Earning money does not depend on other players, but is instead provided to the player. Crafting can be capped with little to no effort aside from farming materials. I have never hit end game bosses, however they appear to be the only truly unforgiving section of the game. The rest is a cakewalk.
FFXI on the other hand nearly mandates group involvement just to level. While some jobs can solo, most require some form of support to survive. Unlocking your subjob, obtaining some advanced jobs, increasing your rank, and unlocking your upper levels all require the help of friends. The game is harder in the sense that no character and few classes are islands unto themselves. Only RDM, BST, NIN, and DNC are truly effectively able to solo most of their needs. And of those, one requires help to even unlock the job, and the other two require that unlocked job to reach their full potential as a soloist.
I suppose Pawkeshup it all depends on whether one considers time required an element of difficulty.
Maxing crafting in FFXI takes a lot longer than in WoW, but in both all you do is press a button. Neither act of crafting is difficult, neither is some sort of intellectual puzzling minigame you must complete.
