How are we defining MMORPG? I've an old copy of Dragon magazine from 1989 talking about revamps to Compu-Serve's Islands of Kesmai, a fantasy game playable by up to 100 people at a time and using ASCII for graphics. According to this timeline, Island debuted in 1984. It also lists Gemstone and Neverwinter nights as being released in 1988.

i would have to say Tibia. its been around since early 90s. it started out small like all games and today its like FFXI, with 18 servers. well that would be the first MMORPG i played so i want to say that. but i dont play it now cuss the people there have all turned to newbs and are a-holes. i liked it back when it was just the 1 server and you knew everyone. but oh well. Now i have FFXI and im happy.

MUDS have been around FOREVER, no exact date on the first MUDS. They are all text based MMPORGs so not exactly a whole lot of technology involved in playing one. They were very fun though.

My first mmorpg was eqoa. It lost its luster for me so I ended up going to FFXI. I still have "homesickness" for my first one though. Oh well, it's never a bad time to move onto bigger and greater things.

Dungeon Seige isn't a MMORPG, you can just play it online.

And PSO is a MMORPG.. but a really bad one..

Anyone remember an old BBS Door Game called Trade Wars 2002? That was the ***** on the BBS's i used to dial up to. That and L.O.R.D.

My first (as long as you count MUDs) was Dragon's Gate. It was by Mythic Entertainment, and still exists today. I put in long hours on this one from about 1992 til somewhere around 1998 or so. Tons of good RPrs sure did make that one fun.
