Are you living in Chicago, or in the suburbs? If it's the former, don't own a car unless it's unavoidable; commuting anywhere in the city is an exercise in despair and frustration.
Around 2002-06 model year? American sedans were terrible back then (and, with few exceptions, still are).
Check out the Chevy Impala and the Pontiac Grand Prix, I guess.
I'm living in the northern suburbs. I know not to get a car if I had to travel downtown, it's nasty trying to drive down there.
I do like the Impala and the Grand Prix. Those were really the only ones I could think of since I have driven them as rentals before.

Find a Focus with Ford SYNC, because I had that as a rental and that sh*t is awesome
I'll check it out. Thanks

It has to be an American brand? That means it has to be a Ford because the others all blow and Ford's the opnly one making any steps forward in the last 10 years. Everything else is a sh*tbox that might look good, but most likely has serious quality issues. Avoid Chrysler/dodge at all costs.
Get a Ford Escape, with 4x4 capabilities.
I don't know if it absolutely HAS to be. But my dad is one of those "American or go home" when it comes to cars. I really don't know why.
Thanks for all the quick responses.
