I was sitting in my livingroom playing Black Ops. And I heard a loud Boom and my house shook. I dropped the controller and went to ask my brother if he heard it too. He was already heading out towards the living room to ask if I had heard/felt it. I walked outside to look around and noticed about 200 yards or so through the woods there is a fire on the other side of a house. It appears to be huge, from the glow of the fire is about twice as long as the house, and I can see flames licking up above the height of the roof top. The lights all go out in the house which has the fire in front of it. They were on when I first started looking, and as the fire appeared the spread the lights went out.

There I'm standing, wondering what to do. I just heard an explosion that was loud enough to shake my house and rattle the dishes in my cabinets. I see a fire that appears to be spreading, as I watch the red/orange glow is getting brighter and spreading. And all the lights in the house next to it have gone off.

So I decide to call the fire department. It's pitch black outside and there is a forest between me and the target, I'm not going to walk over to find out what is wrong. And I don't know the address/phone number of the house in question, never even talked to the people.

They say they'll send a truck out the make sure everything is alright. About 10 minutes after I'm done talking to the dispatcher, the fire appears to be settling down. 5 minutes later I hear sirens, and then the lights of TWO fire trucks driving down the road. I'm just thinking "Great, I called them out here, turns out it probably wasn't anything... and they sent TWO of the fire trucks..."

What would you have done?
(No, I haven't found out what the explosion was.)

The same thing happened to me twice within a three month period several years ago in Florida. Both times it was a raccoon tampering with a transformer on top of a nearby telephone pole. Strangely, both raccoons had no visible signs of damage, but both were very dead.

When in doubt, calling emergency services is never a bad idea.

Unless it causes them to not have enough people for a real emergency, which just happens to arise at exactly the same time, and then ends up costing a life or two. Just because you were afraid of a little fire. Way to go, ****. You just killed a poor defenseless baby. And it's mother who died trying to save it, because the fire department never came, because they were busy dealing with your grill.

The 3D systems in games are amazing now ain't they.

Even if the fire was dying down doesn't mean someone couldn't of been injured you did 100% the correct thing. I would of called the fire dept and went over to see if anyone needed help. Unless it was the house behind mine, that guy is a ****.

I would have phoned the fire brigade and gone to investigate, 'cause I'm not a massive coward.

My first thought when I read your description was "homemade meth lab blew up." I would have called 911 immediately, and probably gone to investigate if I didn't feel in danger.

I once had someone call the fire department on me for a small controlled leaf burn in my front yard. Something which was entirely legal where I live. They had to dispatch a fire truck and crew (regulation, I guess or else the caller just said "Fire at this guy's house!") just to see that it was probably some **** driving down the road who felt a self-righteous conviction that you shouldn't burn leaves. Your tax dollars at work.

Anyway, if the fire department has to put up with retards like that, I wouldn't sweat calling them for what you think is a legitimate emergency.

I would have called the fire brigade in the circumstances as described. If I thought I could have made it over there before the fire trucks I would have investigated in person with a wool blanket/wool clothes. If I got close and didn't see/hear anything from the outside, I probably would leave it to the professionals in protective clothing, so they didn't have to same MY sorry **** too. But I would have gone to see just in case there was anyone obvious banging on a window, or I had a line of sight on someone from outside, or I could hear yelling/screams/wailing.
