Empire Strikes Back Director Irvin Kershner Dead At 87

Irvin Kershner, the director behind what many consider the finest of all the Star Wars films, has passed away at the age of 87.

Irvin Kershner didn't want to direct The Empire Strikes Back. When George Lucas asked him to take on directorial duties for the second Star Wars film, Kershner initially declined, only to accept the offer later at the urging of his manager. It's hard to imagine how the Empire Strikes Back might have turned out if not for his involvement. His exquisite balancing of action and character development made a film that otherwise might have otherwise been a throwaway bridge between A New Hope and Return of the Jedi something truly special.

Prior to Empire Kershner had been directing movies on and off since 1958's Stakeout on Dope Street, a movie about three teens getting caught up in a drug ring.

After Empire Kershner went on to direct the James Bond film Never Say Never Again, Robocop 2, and the cult classic science fiction television show SeaQuest DSV.

Kershner passed away in his Los Angeles home after a long battle with illness.

We'll remember him every time we participate in one of gaming's countless Hoth battles, and whenever a brother and sister unwittingly make-out for the sake of advancing the plot.

'Empire Strikes Back' director Kershner dies in LA [AFP]

Let's just hope they don't slice him open and stick the Star Wars IP inside to keep it alive.

There are plenty of people left to keep Star Wars alive. Just none of them are named George Lucas.

Do we really need to try and revive Star Wars?
Can't we just enjoy the movies for what they are and leave it at that?

Not till they get Timothy Zahn to write the script and direct the Thrawn Trilogy.

With that kind of attitude, we'll never get a gritty reboot in which Han has an eyepatch.

Of the original 3 I always liked 1, 3, and 2 in that order.

You mean 4, 6, 5. Unless you had a sad childhood during the 90's.

It looks like George Lucas came in here and rated everyone down.

That's a shame. I've never been a huge fan of Star Wars, but I did enjoy the old movies. Then, George Lucas and friends turned his movies into a series of merchandise items. A very large series...

But, I guess we should have seen that coming when the empire was defeated by a village of midget teddy bears.
(No offense is meant to anyone who may or may not be a midget teddy bear)

Rest in peace, Irvin Kershner.

Then Jar Jar Binks came and rated all of us back up.

What do you mean "then"? Star Wars was merchandised from day one. Some of us remember the "empty box" marketing they scrambled to do because the film was so popular but they hadn't been able to get the toys and action figures actually cast yet. While you can certainly argue that the initial marketing value wasn't predicted (or they wouldn't have given it away to Lucas for almost nothing), and that later films were more likely to contain elements specifically intended for merchandising, it's not like that didn't pretty much happen by the second film. If you're holding out some kind of nostalgic view of the "good old days" when Star Wars films weren't "corrupted" by merchandising you are probably just too young to remember.

Hah! One of my cousins absolutely hates Jedi because of this. He just can't accept the idea that a galactic empire could be thwarted by a bunch of little bears with spears. Their cuteness makes him want to kill them as well, so there is that!

That's something I've wanted to see since I first read those books. I also think the Han Solo Trilogy would have made a better prequel series.
