If someone lived with you previously or gave your phone number as their contact number and they had some pretty heavy debt, how would you get the collectors to not call your home anymore without giving away contact information for the person in question?

Currently I've just been ignoring the calls. For some reason I don't think they would believe me saying "They don't live here anymore, stop calling, goodbye."

Tell them they don't live there anymore, and if they call again, you're going to call the police.

Ya... I don't think that is the answer.

Put your number on the "Do Not Call" list, then tell them you'll sue if they call you again?

the correct answer is to get rid of your landline because this isn't 1993.

Isn't the "Do Not Call" list for Telemarketing, not Debt Collection?

It is cheaper for me to have a landline bundled on my cable than it is to pay for a cell phone.

I meant for the company, they should have a personal do not call list. Just ask to be placed on it the next time they call.

Considering that if I bundle phone in with my Cable and Internet package, I lower my monthly cable bill by 20-40 dollars every time I renew my contract.... I'd say by enough :)

You get really good deals from your cable company if you keep pestering them about lowering the cost.

Pretty sure you could just tell them that the person in question doesn't live there, and request that they stop calling you. Should that fail, you can do the whole "Cease Contact" letter thing.

No, they never believe that. Up here, we just tell them to stop calling or we'll seek legal recourse. It works as they aren't allowed to harrass you and the fact that the person they are trying to contact you doesn't live with you gives you all the things you need to ***** them in court. At least, that's how it is here. You guys **** around with your laws down there, so who knows.

Quickest way to get yourself removed from the contact info up here.

Personally, I would tell them I am a consultant that bills for $100/hr, and further speaking would constitute an agreement to these terms. I would then ask them for their address and send them the bill.

Or something like that.

The person who used to have the landline number I have was apperently a deadbeat. I used to get calls on the number all the time. I resolved it by informing them the first time that the number was now on the do not call list and that I have no idea or could care less where the other person was now, but if they called me about it again I would report them. And then when they called again, I reported them. I never got a third call.

https://complaints.donotcall.gov/complaint/complaintcheck.aspx?panel=2

Bill collectors are only allowed to call you if there is a "buisiness relationship" between you and them. I.E., you actually owe them money. Once you have informed them that they have the wrong information and that the number is on the do not call registry, they are legally obligated to stop contacting you, or be fined $500 per call. Of course, if you do actually owe them money and give them false information, and it eventually escalates to a court date and police, etc, then you are screwed if you have been reporting them and getting them fined. But in this scenario where the person who didn't pay their debts no longer lives there and is not your concern anymore, you have every reason to demand the bill collectors cease contacting you.

There is unfortunatly a lag time between when you add yourself to the do not call list and when the telemarketers are legally barred from calling you of 31 days. Thats designed to give them time to update their lists, and given that they get fined if they call you I think thats probably fair.

When I was a kid and first moved into this house, apparently a travel agent owned the number we had before. We would get calls constantly about booking, and would get daily fax calls, even at 2am or later in the morning a fax machine would be calling our home line, you pick it up and get that annoying modem dial tone.

My father had to change our number because we couldn't get it to stop any other way.

We had what I can only assume was a debt collector calling our house, asking if we were friendly with our neighbor, Jane Doe (name changed to protect the innocent) and asked if we could give her a message to call this company back. On the second call, I told them that not only did we not know this neighbor, but we were not their answering service and to never call our house again. When they called a third time I threatened legal action, and they didn't call back. Crazy *****.

I have a friend with a saved voicemail of a guy saying something along the lines of, "Mr. Smith, this is doctor soandso. You probably don't remember seeing me, but we've gotten your test results back in and I think we need to talk about them in person. Give me a call as soon as possible. It's urgent."

Obviously the callback number led to a collection agency.

I'll bet this is particularly effective against gays.

Keep track of all the calls and when they happen. After you tell them to stop and they keep it up you are gathering more ammunition to give to the state attorney general FTC.

When I was a kid, one of our phone lines was one number off from the major water company in the area. Apparently, in one of their mailings they misprinted their number such that it was identical to ours. For years, every month we'd get calls about people complaining about their bills. In this case, there was nothing to do about it since it wasn't companies calling us, but customers of a company mistakenly calling us. We just kept telling people the correct number and eventually the calls died down. We'd still very occasionally get one though. I'd assume someone put the number on the fridge, or in a book years and years earlier and just happened to have the one that was ours.

The topic itself has been answered. Bill collectors cannot harass you if you are not actually a customer who owes them money. They get away with it because most people don't realize that they can be reported and fined for each call. Let them know that you do know this, and that you will report them, and they'll stop.

My current phone number is one number off from the local Taco Bell. And it's a 9 instead of a 6. So the numbers are relatively close in both visual and location of the keys. Surprisingly I've only been called once that I know of that was mistaken call for Taco Bell. My brother tells me that he's answered a few calls that were for Taco Bell.

Could I interest you in a 12 inch sausage?

Back in school, there was a small store in the basement of the dorms. They made 6 and 12 inch pizzas there. Pepperoni, Sausage, Supreme, etc. People would order 12 inch sausage pizzas just to hear the girls behind the counter yell "12 inch sausage" when it was ready.
