I bought a DVD today, and on the back it says "Aspect Ratio 1.85:1, this movie is available in wide screen only". But when I play it on my PS3, it shows up with big black bars on the sides, not playing in widescreen.
I've looked through all the video settings on the PS3 to try and get it to playback what the DVD says it is, but I don't understand half the settings (mostly stuff about colors, and upscaling). I've looked through the DVD setup and there is no options for different Aspect Ratios (the back of the DVD says widescreen only).
Is the problem with my PS3 (a setting, or something) or is the DVD lying to me.
So, I have:
My PS3
A set of the HD Component Cables. YPBPR
A 37 inch TV which supports 720p
PS3 Is set to output 720p normally,
I despise full screen DVDs, and made sure I was buying what I thought was wide screen. I understand the ideas behind aspect ratio. But upscaling, etc is beyond me. I'm not sure what settings I'm ******** up in my PS3.

Um, not sure if I can be of any help, I'm using an archaic first gen DVD player that my wife and I won years ago from a TV station.
However, maybe the PS3 doesn't know how to treat that resolution...?
720p is scaled to 16:9 I think, and the image in the wiki article shows that the two aspect ratios are slightly different.

1.85:1 is really close to 16:9 (1.78:1). And it's a fairly common theater aspect ratio. It should show in wide screen on my TV with a couple tiny black bars top and bottom (if any).

Have you tried playing it on a regular DVD player (presumably one which correctly displays other widescreen formated films) and seeing if it displays in widescreen? Do you have other widescreen films which display properly on your PS3? Those would seem to be the first tests.
Is the aspect ratio of the actual image not widescreen? It's possible for a wide screen configured device, to block a video into 3:4 ratio, and then the image is displayed in 1.6/1.8:1 ratio inside that block. What is actually being displayed?
Does this ratio continue through the film itself, or just the opening screen?

What is the name of the DVD are you trying to watch? If I have it I'll test it with my PS3.

f you go to your video settings and go to BD/DVD upscaler this should be switched to Normal; however when you do select it, it says while the PS3 is hooked via Component some DVD's can't be upscaled, so thats probably your problem. Do you not have a HDMI cable?

Exactly, the PS3 restrained him with it's cables and it forcing him to watch it till either brain death sets in, or he dies from starvation/dehydration.

This morning I tried fiddling around with the PS3 again to get the image to display correctly... no luck at all. I don't have an HDMI cable for my PS3, so I can't see if that's the issue yet. It may be.

If you do plan to get an HDMI cable get one from Newegg. Freaking price gouging Best Buy with their $50 cables, and they aren't even the name-brand cables.

My HD cable box actually doesn't have an HDMI output. Only the YPBPR. It's an older model, I need to talk to them about upgrading to a DVR package, and upgrading two of my normal cable boxes to HD ones. Maybe I'll tell them I want to trade in my older HD box for a newer one with HDMI.

Check your TV settings, I have mine set to 4:3 for standard def TV which squishes the image down to the appropriate ratio. The button on my remote is P.setup.
FYI, yPbPr = 480P, it's a big difference. It's why I hate Nintendo so much, a current gen console shouldn't be putting out less than half the resolution current gen TVs do, even if it is a "kids console".
Edit. I was incorrect it's Nintendo that limits it to 480p. Component gets you to 1080i and a pseudo 1080p.
