Edit. I was incorrect it's Nintendo that limits it to 480p.

Which kind of sucks for using Netflix through your Wii. Not enough to stop me from doing it but enough to make me aimlessly grumble at Nintendo.

Well, I finally hooked up my HDMI cable to the PS3 and it works correctly. And found out that the TV in my living room actually supports 1080p.

Strange that I couldn't get it to work with the component cables.

That's kinda like saying that it's strange that my NES won't support Black Ops.

???
There's no good reason why he couldn't get a widescreen image with component cables at 720 or 1080i. I mean obviously there's a reason that it happened but nothing inherent about component cables that should have caused the problem in the OP.

Limited data flow caused one device or another to 'default' to some setting or another?

But I already knew my PS3 could output 720p while playing its games and my TV supported it. And my TV supported 720p video output from my cable box (I could watch widescreen movies!). It really wasn't that drastic of an assumption that the PS3 should be able to output a 720p widescreen image using the exact same setup. Yet for some reason beyond me, the PS3 doesn't like playing DVDs over the component cables. It plays games over it no problem, and my cable box plays movies over the same type of cables, etc, etc.

So no, it is not like me wondering why an NES will not play Black Ops.

If you are using a receiver you may have to run Component out cables to your TV, it won't send component cable signals through the HDMI out.

Wait...you are using the same setting on your receiver for games as you are for dvds right?

My cable box has a set of YPBPR outputs that are connected to one of the YPBPR inputs on my TV. This is separate from my PS3 input, which was on a second set of YPBPR inputs on my TV (but is now connected to one of the HDMI inputs). I don't have a receiver of any sort between my PS3 and TV.
