Wrap.

Because: My "poor" family looks even more down on you if you take the gift and place it inside a plastic Wal-mart bag, tie it..and then place it into another bag (maybe another wal-mart one) to "hide" the gift better.
And gift bags look lame. You always then need tissue paper for the top for it to look right..and that is just more money wasted.

buying a news paper for the sole purpose of using it for wrapping paper is also looked down upon in my family. Bunch of damn picky people...the paper stays on there for a whole 30sec once I hand them the gift..wtf does it matter what it is wrapped in?

Ok, you are doing this wrong.

Walmart bags and newspaper are not the things to use for present wrapping.

They are gifts, not bulk comestibles.

It really depends. For birthdays, I'm usually buying the gift last minute, so I'll buy a bag and some tissue paper. For Christmas, I have to wrap it. I don't know why. I love Christmas wrapping paper.

If it's a birthday gift for a little kid, though, I'll wrap it 'cause they seem to have so much fun tearing into it.

I also give a lot of gift cards, so a lot of times, I'm handing them a greeting card instead of a wrapped or bagged gift.

I'm pretty sure that any gay worth his sling will go with wrapping paper.

I wrap Christmas and family birthday gifts. Gifts for things like kid's parties for my kid's friends get a bag. Usually a bag bought from the store where we're buying the gift while en route to the party.

When I was little, for months, I saved my favorite cartoons from the newspaper, yes the real paper one... ROFL. Upon the holiday, I wrapped all our gifts in the cartoons. Made for great conversation.

I usually bag it unless it's fairly small/easy to wrap...or really if we are just out of bags. I'm waaaay too lazy to try and wrap something correctly, it probably looks better bagged than wrapped. Plus it doesn't leave as much of a mess and can be used multiple times!

My joy comes from the look on their face when they see what I got them. The wrapping paper is just needless suspense that I don't find the point of sacrificing a tree for. At least bags are reusable.

It depends on the gift for me. If it's smallish, I'll bag it with lots of tissue so you still have to do some digging.

But I'm fairly known for the wedding gifts and baby shower/baptism gifts. Those I tend to buy a medium-size wooden box that latches and I'll fill the box with all the goodies amidst tissue paper. That way the wooden box can be used later to hold the wedding/baby memorabilia.

Some people wrap gifts with so much tape and with the paper so tight, you need a knife/scissors to open it. Gift bags all the way.

I wrap stuff, myself. I used to be much better at it than I am now (I worked in a gift shop for a bit, got sickeningly good at it). This year I went to the extreme of wrapping them, and placing them in either a stocking or a box. I wrapped the box as well. It led to much laughter, as was intended.

And on the topic of wrapping stuff in an annoying fashion...

My mother was the queen of this. One year, she got my sister a pendant in a small box... which she wrapped, placed in another box, wrapped it, and placed it in another box.. until she had a box about the side of a crock-pot/toaster oven...

I payed her back one year. I found a tape (yes, olde story is olde) that she really wanted, so I wrapped it... then circled it with strapping tape, then duct tape, then packing tape, then another layer of strapping tape and more wrapping paper.

She still talks about it to this day. With pride, I might add.

Oh, for those unfamiliar with strapping tape, think duct tape with very stretchy plastic bands/fibers in it.

Another good rule of thumb: if it is already packaged as a rectangular prism, wrap it. If it is awkward to wrap, bag it.

If it's rectangular, it'll fit quite snugly into a bag as well.
