Winter storm!Follow

#1 Feb 01 2011 at 7:26 PM Rating: Good
So, it's one of the biggest storms of the last 10 years.
How is it affecting you? Today we have below 32 temps and wind chills in the teens. Were expecting snow for the next two days here. It's dangerous and going to be crazy here.

-10F (-23C) here. Wind chill @ -28F (-33C)

No snow to speak of, though.

It's supposed to be in the 40's by Thursday, so that's nice. Smiley: grin

I'll let you know once the two storms combine into one and hit us tomorrow afternoon.

There's a Dragonball Z joke in there somewhere.

It was 70 yesterday, and is 20 right now. Was mostly rain this morning before the temperature plummeted. We aren't expecting any snow though.

Besides the snow, the real joy is the drifts. There's a 40" wall of snow blocking the way between my front door and sweet, sweet freedom.

Tomorrow, I'mmagonna kick its *** with a shovel.

Houston might have the tiniest bit of snow, but you know as well as I do that the "tiniest bit of snow" in the south is nothing but trouble :/

State of Wisconsin closed for all intents and purposes so I get a free paid day off. Additionally, I fell on my *** in the middle of the street at 7AM yesterday morning. Wonderful start to the day.

The roads were a bit icy on my way to work, and the NMDoT hadn't started doing anything about them yet(I did see one of their trucks on the road as I neared work, so they were likely getting started).

The real problem, however, is that my fellow New Mexicans don't know how to handle snow. I was driving slowly and carefully, even then I fishtailed a bit on two turns. Other folks on the road seemed to have the mindset that "If I drive faster, then I can get out of the snow sooner!".

That worked about as well as anyone could expect.

This lasts for the first storm of the year. Then people wise up. Or die off.

Where I live, we usually only have one, maybe two winter storms a year.

Still have about a foot of snow on the ground from last three storms now they are coated in a 1/2" layer of ice. Temp is rising to above freezing so now its just raining out.

We were supposed to get an ice storm, but the temperature rose too high and all we ended up with was two days of rain. It's 48F out now and the snow is slowly going the hell away. Hopefully we won't see any more this season.

Well, the panic is on here in central Texas. With the cold being colder than the last 15+ years they have rolling blackhouts on power? Huh? They never have them in the summer at 100+ degree days! I got home to a dark home with no power. It was 30 degrees inside and my cats still greeted me at the door. I called the power Co-Op and they mentioned power outages and rolling ones. I had left the two spaceheaters on to keep the pipes from freezing and the sink in the bathroom and kitchen running. I'm guessing the power was out for several hours or more. The sink in the bathroom had frozen ice from the faucet to the drain and the toilet had ice in it and the lines to both are frozen. Kitchen is still going thank Goddes.
Anyways, I have the stove open both heaters on now. Power came on 20 min ago. Finished putting plastic over all the cheap windows. Its up to 37 now inside! Whoot! God I love

It was almost 60 degrees here yesterday, but it was pouring rain the entire day. Today, the high is mid to low 30's, and it was snowing when I left for work. No accumulation, though.

This winter has been crazy.

They're having the blackouts all over Texas. :(

Just got an email from the university that says it's even cutting off power to traffic lights. I thought those had backups...

The power was only out a few hours and everything is freezing in your house? Is it made of cardboard?

Right, my bad. Not a whole lot that can be done to improve the R value of that, substantially.

What a wonderful way of enjoying Groundhogs Day and my birthday is to shovel off 18" of snow plus even higher drifts. As well as the massive pile of heavy hard **** the plows like to put at the end of the driveway.
