It seems that everything I buy is too large for a single person to eat and not throw away most of it. I buy the smallest packages of things I can find, but say I want corn or beans with dinner... I end up throwing out half a can. I buy the prepackaged salad mixes because it's a waste to buy the whole lettuce heads, etc. But even the smallest bag of salad mix is two fairly large side salads.

Why can't they sell stuff geared towards a single user.

I agree with you that they don't have enough stuff that feeds a single person, but I get around this by making two meals out of most things. It saves money that way too. I HATE HATE HATE throwing food away, so I will always find another use for it if possible.

Well, I try to reuse what I can. But I dislike having the same thing more than once in a row. I put it in the fridge, and it ends up going bad. The biggest waste is pizza sauce. Every week and a half or so I make a pizza, but the I only use about 1/5th of the smallest can of sauce I can find. The rest of the can sits in the fridge until it spoils (after a week and a half passes, the sauce smells bad)

Why would you throw out the corn or beans? They're good for a couple days in the fridge.

Most of my friends have the same issue with leftovers (they never eat them), so I always end up taking theirs. I consider myself fortunate that I can eat the same food (depending on what it is) for several days in a row without much trouble. I think a lot of it comes from not having the time or energy to cook very often. Smiley: laugh

Because they'll sit in the fridge for 5-7 days before I feel like eating them again. Like I said, I dislike eating the same thing often. I usually make something different each day of the week.

Buy frozen veggies. Only take what you want from the bag, reseal the bag and throw it back in the freezer. Beans you can just refrigerate the leftovers. I don't know what the salad issue is. It should keep for about a week.

So use the leftovers in different recipes. Don't just eat the beans as a side on their own. Rinse them and use them in a soup. Make nachos. Use leftover corn in shepherd's pie. Use some of the salad mix on your sandwich as you would normal lettuce. Have some salad with chicken or fish on it as an all-in-one meal.

Freeze leftover sauce.

I tend to either cook things for others with the leftovers, or vaccuume seal them, or make my own deep freeze instant meals ready to go. then again i like cooking.

I've been having this problem recently. I like to buy fresh veggies to put on sandwiches and in salads and such, but it seems like once sliced they go bad pretty quickly. One whole pepper is too much for me to eat before it seems to get soggy and weird looking. It's probably because I am always in a hurry, so I usually sit and slice them/chop them at the beginning of the week so I can just throw stuff together and go, but I've also been wasting a lot of bread and lunch meat lately too...
However I once stumbled upon a cool recipe website where you enter in what you have, and it spits out things to make. You could try something like that when you realize you have some things that are going to go bad soon.

So, you claim to only buy the single serving foods? If you do then you eat less than a field mouse.
Nearly all vegies come in small single serving cans these days. I have lots of them. I also use the Kaolian method to food that is left over if I make a lot. Making a large pot of spagetti can feed you for 2-3 days easy and keeping food in the refrigerator for 2-3 days will not hurt. Just reheat well and enjoy.

Don't buy canned veggies. Buy fresh or frozen, fresh lets you choose how much you want and frozen lasts a very long time. If you're worried about wasting some of a $0.99 head of lettuce...don't eat salad. You're spending twice that on your little bag of premix.

Stag chili is nasty. Very nasty. Best to make a real pot of chili and freeze what you don't eat. The KD part could be good.

Well, that settles it. Frito pie goes somewhere on the dinner menu outline for the next two weeks.

This. There are even disposable(or reusable if you're willing to wash dishes) containers with compartments that you can use to better facilitate this.

Utilize your freezer. Invest in a good set of Tupperware (even better are the food vacuum system) so you can put away the leftover ingredients and they will hold a bit better in the refrigerator if you re-use. Otherwise, put them away in the freezer.

For veggies, get the frozen veggies and only take out as much as you need.

Plan your meals ahead of time.

For salads and stuff, the fresh lettuce and veggies will stay fresher in a the food vacuum bags.

I do have a large freezer, but it's almost always full of meat. I buy cows and pigs and vacuum pack the meat. That way I don't have to worry about buying meat throughout the year. Right now I have about half a cow and a bit of pig left over from the early summer. Needless to say, many of my weekly meals involve ground beef. Just waiting for better weather to start eating all these steaks.

I will be switching to frozen vegetables. I honestly never really considered it, just never really used them before.

If you can't be motivated to cook when you get home, get a slow cooker to take that pressure off you. Freeze the rest of the meals.

Also, try eating ravioli and mash and other easy meals.

and don't say there's no small ravioli cans in your area
