Detox DietsFollow

I feel like "cleansing" diets are the new big thing a lot of my friends are doing (and posting about on facebook). Two in the past week started up some form of detox diet. I guess the idea is to purge all the artificial crap that gets into you from eating processed and unhealthy foods through a select diet and/or supplements. These are two I've seen so far:

Standard Process Detox Diet: Basically eating select food (mostly raw vegetables and fruits), some shakes, and a ton of supplements. Lasts 21 days. NO:
grains
beans
nuts
dairy
rice
Nothing that is not on the list.

According to him, "It sucks a ton so far. I'm constantly hungry and tired. Yesterday I almost crashed my car cuz I couldn't concentrate on the road." From what I've read online, losing 10-20 lbs in 3 weeks (it lasts 21 days) is common. My friend could use some weight loss, but that seems a bit extreme. Plus, ew, hundreds of dollars on pills.


The second one is a juice diet. As it sounds, it's no solid foods, just juices made with a blender and fresh veggies/fruits. It sounds like it could be tasty, but still... I think his lasts 10 days. He's in good shape already, so it seems he's going for it more for the detoxing and re-energizing effects than weight loss.


So, anyone have experience with some of these?

I've heard many doctors talk about these (I listen to a lot of talk radio). Most say that they are garbage at best. Our bodies are storing up toxins in our bowels or anything silly like that. I think like most fad diets, their greatest positive effect is the feeling that you are doing something, as opposed to anything actually tremendous happening from the diet itself.

Ray used to do the lemon juice master cleanse for a weekend when they were doing height/weight measurements for the Navy. Quick way to drop pounds to ensure that you were under the weight limit.

I've done the Shakeology cleanse under the BeachBody label (P90X) and that only lasted a weekend. I liked that one because it was only 3 days and you did lose weight, but you learned portions and healthy eating habits.

Theres a documentary regarding the juice fasting on Netflix that I watched called Fat Sick and Nearly Dead. I really liked the idea of it, and it sounded (of course) like it worked great for him and the other guy, and they actually felt good too.

Actually since I'm fasting, I've been eating healthy breakfasts (morning meals) because you want to have something good in your stomach if you aren't going to eat for 17ish hours.
Been eating horrible amounts of junk food after dinner, though.

What I've learned from this is that I start feeling hungry after not eating anything for 15-16 hours, and start feeling thirsty after 12 hours or so. The thirst would probably be worse if it was actually hot outside, though.

It's also the first time I've been able to not smoke for a long time without grazing. I think I'll stop that habit during the day.



I've done the "no solids for a weekend" thing a couple of times. Just living off water, tea and chicken broth. That's actually really nice.
I think it cleanses you a bit in the same way drinking 5 litres of peppermint tea a day cleanses you when you have a cold.

I think I'm going to try the HCG diet. Seems crazy, but I'm at a point were I either try it, or save up and get my stomach cut up.

You talking about the one that is nothing but lemon juice, red pepper, water and maple syrup? That one is a BAD idea, a few people have done small studies with it, yes you lose weight fast but problem is it isn't fat you end up losing it is all water and muscle that is lost.

But for a quick loss of weight that is pretty much for show, yeah it works.

I had a friend who was big on the fads back when I was in college. She also had little sense of modesty, so I have a fair amount of knowledge of what happened to her during these attempts. With the juice diet she went on(not sure if it was the same one you linked, just that it was a juice diet), there was the "fun" side effect of ultra watery diarrhea. She described it as her "soup ****".

My girlfriend tried this last summer and said she lost about 10 lbs. I tried it, oh, perhaps last winter, and ended up gaining a few pounds. My thinking? The HCG does jack, but eating less (which is the part of the HCG diet that people seem to skip over) helps a lot more. I didn't focus so much on the eating less part Smiley: lol

Detox diets 'cleanse' you of normal variable weight. Skip the 'detox' part, just shoot for 'eat less/do more' and you will be fine. Oh, and stick with it, even if you don't get magical results over the course of a weekend.

I only eat between sunset and sunrise.

The thing is, I'm not bingeing as much as grazing some hours a day instead of constantly.

I did decide to make huge dinners the first couple of days and it just made me feel ill.

That's why he did it. Just to make sure he stayed within measurements. The cabbage soup diet too for a week would work to drop weight/inches.

Those are all just shortcuts. The only way to really lose weight is to follow a moderate healthy diet and do physical activity of any form every day.

Isn't it supposed to be better to eat small meals more frequently throughout the day? I don't know much about nutrition, but that's what I've heard.

As far as detox diets go, they have all the classic signs of a bogus diet fad. I'm not buying it.

I only have one diet axiom that I go by: drink water. No soda, no gatorade, no vitamin water, no energy drinks. Just water.

Funny that you should mention this; I recall reading that detox diets were popularized in the 50's by the founder of Scientology, so I was thinking the same thing. Smiley: lol

It generally is, but really, I can't eat a very large meal for Iftar (breaking fast) anyway.
