Now, some might make the mistake of thinking that "knight" sounds similar to "right, and that the correct interpretation of the sign is "bear right". But that's not the case. A close examination should reveal that in German "knight" is related to "Nict", which means "night" (duh!). The knight (or "night") at attention shows us that he's facing northward, the standard direction to face when standing at attention for the Teutonic Knights (it's a little known fact, but absolutely true).
