You know, I thought I was one of those, until I turned 25 and a switch flicked somewhere. Seemed like all of a sudden I was just able to put on weight and muscle like normal folks.

This. I would not bank too long on the whole "I can eat whatever I want and not get fat!". Most people who are like that in their teens and early 20s will start ballooning in their 30s and 40s. They get used to eating whatever they want, and when their metabolism shifts, they don't change the behavior. Then they get fat.

When I graduated high school (at 18) I was 6'2" and 128 lbs.

When I was 28 (ten years later) I was 140 lbs.

At 38 I was 160 lbs.

With no change in consumption.

THEN I started taking Prednisone. Fat gut Bijou.

Point is at @35 I didn't burn away the calories like I used to.Smiley: frown

So I've been at about 1300-1500 daily for a couple months now (first made the topic, I had already lowered my eating for a couple weeks or so). Other than the occasional weekend meal with the folks where I may eat a nice steak, salad, and potatoes, but on those days I usually just eat late breakfast and a small snack/lunch to make up for it.

At the start I was roughly 260 (maybe a little lower, didn't make it a habit to weigh myself).
End of august, I was at 248 lbs.
Today I was at 237 lbs.

I think I'm losing weight a little faster than the suggested max of 2 lbs per week. But I am eating nearly 1500 calories daily. I'm not hungry, the only times I ever really feel hungry is if it's a late day at work and I don't eat dinner soon enough (but usually won't eat a snack at that time, since I know in 30-45 minutes I'd be home to eat).

Didn't change what I ate very much, just how much. Had to switch to turkey pepperoni and cut down on cheese and bread considerably. But that's about it.

Turkey pepperoni? I must look in to this. Is it still tasty?

It doesn't taste exactly the same as regular pepperoni. And it has a different smell (my brother says it stinks) but it has 70 calories for 16 slices as opposed to 140 calories for 12 slices of the normal stuff. I've been using the Hormel brand.

We have some turkey bacon. It's crispy, crunchy, and has some of the bacony goodness at half the price. Plus it's supposed to be better for you.

It's still just not quite bacon though. Smiley: frown

Turkey bacon is a lot more than "not quite bacon". It's not even close.

I still eat regular bacon. The stuff I have is only 60 calories a slice, so two slices with a couple eggs and toast for a weekend breakfast isn't bad. Weekday breakfast usually consists of some combination of cereal, boiled eggs, or a tuna fish sandwich.

Glad to hear it's going well, Tirith!

Not to jump on the weight-loss story bandwagon, but I'm trying to do the same. The biggest issue I have is not figuring out what I need to do, but making myself do it Smiley: tongue

We had a similar topic to this, oh, some years ago. At the time I was really into working out and eating right; this was mostly because I had been dumped by my girlfriend and switched into "Dissatisfied with life, must reinvent myself!" mode. Also known as "Fatty, you won't find another girl attracted to you if you don't find yourself attractive!" mode. Aaaanyway, I dropped from being 210 at the end of university to 165 over the course of a year or so. Soon after I got a new girlfriend, and completely stopped working and began going out to eat a lot more. Also I picked up a habit of excessive drinking (in the form of Four Loko) thanks to the friends I had at the time.

Result being that I was about 215 lbs by the end of August this year. Smiley: frown

September, I came back from vacation, broke off my relationship, and have been working at being better. I'm down to 207 as of last Friday, and I'll weigh myself again this weekend. My schedule is easy enough: only eat 1200-1500 calories a day (usually at the lower end of that), drink sparingly (Four Loko is a banned item for me now; 660 calories, plus drunken binge-eating), and exercise more (thank god FL summer heat is breaking) in the form of walking to and from work every day (45 minutes, about 2 1/2 miles each way). Ideally I'd like to cut out all alcohol, but I'd probably need therapy for that, plus it kills a lot of your social opportunities in a college town. Compromise is "never buy alcohol to bring home," so I only drink when I'm out or we have a party.

Hoping that by the end of October I'll be under 200 lbs for the first time in several months (I'll promptly replace some of the weight during the FL-GA game in Jacksonville; got a hotel booked with some friends to go up for the weekend). By the end of the year, I'd like to be around 185, which is near my ideal weight (180; when I got to 170 people said I was looking thin, and under that, even my long-time friends were saying I needed to slow down the weight loss). Might need to add in some gym time; walking 5 miles five days a week is fine, but when I was doing P90X for a month or hitting up the gym every morning, I was losing weight like a fiend.

Ok, I'll stop hijacking your thread. Congo-rats on the weight-loss, doesn't it feel good? Smiley: nod

Edit: As of tonight I'm between 203 and 204. Yay! Hoping if I put in a bit more effort I'll be back at 200 by next weekend Smiley: grin

I keep hitting a floor. I'm hovering right between 200-203 (this morning I was at the upper end of the spectrum). I haven't been under 200 in several years, so I'm trying to buckle down and break that plateau so I can hopefully reach my target of 180 before the wedding next June.

Slight update, as someone bumped the thread...

Well, the last couple of weekends have kinda killed all the progress I was making. I think I said it before: alcohol = too many calories (both from drinking and overeating). Two weekends ago it was the "Shots for Tots" fundraiser... $10 all you can drink party. Oy... then last weekend we got a 1.75 L glass jug of Firefly Sweet Tea. I don't remember much of Friday nor Saturday night, but by the end of the weekend the entire thing was drained and I ended up eating almost an entire package of fish fillets by myself. Blaaaargh.

On the plus side, I kept up with the exercise and am still sitting at 204. So I didn't backslide much! Still hoping to be under 200 by the end of the month; we shall see!

take up swimming every day for 30-60 minutes (also those aqua aerobics and aqua bootcamps are great) Cut back on the breads, pastas and rices - replace those with colorful veggies (more colorful = more nutrients) , use smaller plates. Cut back on red meats and replace with fish, tofu and the occasional chicken/turkey. (watch the fish some are very fatty. tilapia is low cal and easy to prepare) Drinking lots of water helps flush your body. Eat more beans - great fiber!

Going Vegan will make you lose weight however you have to pay close attention to what you are putting in your body to ensure you arent starving and that you are getting all the nutrients you need. Plant proteins burn faster than animal so you may be chugging nasty shakes to replace the protein. If you live in SoCal this isnt difficult because you have a lot of fresh options and even restaurants that have delicious vegan options but other places like texas..its a little more difficult

I'm down to 178. Skipped meals and proteins and vegs > all other foods, mostly.

Not that my overall heath is great mind you, but I'm down 17 lbs in the last 18 months.

ETA: I'm a bit of an alcohol *****, so could be better weight loss and overall health.Smiley: bah

Since I get all my dieting advice from Cracked, I must partially protest your advice.

But seriously, I wouldn't worry too much about cutting back on red meats as your protein choice. Making sure your portions of it are appropriate size, however, will likely result in cutting back for most folks. And go lean with it. Definitely agree with the "trade out grains for veggies" part, though. And the thing with the beans.

The correct portion size for meat is 3 oz.

You can measure this as:

- The size of a deck of cards (1 inch thick cuts)
- The size of the palm of your hand ( 1/2 inch thinner cuts)
