Details?

That was pretty much the story Smiley: laugh We all sat down to eat, he went into the bathroom, came back out a couple minutes later and calmly said "You should go look in the bathroom." The sink was off the wall but the pipes were still intact, so it was just sort of hanging off of it. We wanted to take pictures, but assumed it would probably be better not to have evidence of it.

We finished our meal and left about half an hour later.
Yeah, but how? Did he hulk out and rip it off the wall? Slip and fall on it, causing it to tear off the wall? Sit on it and break it that way?

Looking for directions? Smiley: sly

Actually, we asked him the same thing. Apparently he grabbed it by the sides and then put his weight into lifted it up, down, side-to-side (this is starting to sound dirty). Basically prying at it until it came loose from the wall, and then just let it sit on the pipes. He's not a big guy (5' 9", 160 lbs), so I was a little surprised he managed to do it. I guess if you apply pressure in the right spots it's not that tough to do.

Did the same thing a few months ago at a bar in Jacksonville. That time the pipes DID break, and we exited the establishment quite fast. But he was MUCH drunker then. We thought he was joking when he said he'd do it at Steak N' Shake.

I suppose the real question is, what's wrong with your friend that he gets his rocks off tearing sinks out of walls?

I have a question about weight loss.

I've lost roughly 50 pounds over the last 4 and a half months. Everyone at work and a few of our sales reps have commented on it. There are about half a dozen men/women at work and a few wifes/husbands of co-workers who have had gastric bypass surgery and lost similar amount of weight. Friday while working on a down machine a group of operators asked me about my weight loss. They were impressed that I did it without surgery, and one commented that I could eat what I wanted and not get sick, like a nice steak dinner if I felt like it. I guess one of their wives had the bypass surgery and couldn't eat large amounts of food without getting ill.

So my question, does the bypass surgery do anything other than force you to eat less? If not, why pay for the surgery, when you can just eat less? I don't know everyone at work who has had the bypass personally, but the ones I do were not the dieting type, and just one day decided "I'll get the surgery to fix it!". Just seems like a waste of money.

Well that's a complicated question. The short answer is, we still don't know if there are other effects. The primary effect is definitely due to eating far less, but the amount of weight lost seems to suggest that there is more going on than just malnutrition. We don't fully understand it yet though. There's a lot of physiological change that occurs after these surgeries, and a lot of normal processes can get altered.

Another side of this is that a lot of people CAN'T just eat less. For many obese people food is an addiction, and not an easy one to quit. Additionally, have you ever tried to stop eating when you're still hungry? It's quite difficult. Now, some people can do it, but it takes a lot more willpower than some people are capable of. I'm not necessarily trying to justify their habits, but what I'm saying is that surgery could seem like a very appealing option for people who aren't able to make lifestyle changes like that. (Plus, insurance probably covers it, keeping the cost to the patient minimal.)

An interesting study came out a little while ago that shows that raw food has less calories than cooked food. Discover has a good takedown in non science-ese.

This is something that was sort of assumed by nutritionists (and espoused by raw foodists) for many decades, but this is one of the first times it's been examined with proper testing.

So if you want to lose weight without necessarily decreasing the volume of your food intake, add more uncooked and minimally processed foods to your diet. (Yay, sashimi.)

I'm at 205 now. Christmas definitely wasn't an easy time to keep things under control, what with everyone at work bringing in candy, cookies, crackers, meats, cheeses and various other dishes for everyone to try.

I'm down to 190-195 and for the first time in probably about 13 years, I weigh less than 200 lbs. I'm well used to the lifestyle now. I've increased my calorie intake the last month or so, but keep things balanced. Cereal or eggs for breakfast. Sandwiches or soup, salads and fruit for lunch. Reasonable sized dinner. I allow myself a bit of snacking here and there, someone brings in cookies or something I'll have one or two. If I'm invited out to lunch at work I'll go. It all balances out in the end. Still no sugared drinks, though I do drink a diet cola on occasion.

I can tell my blood pressure has dropped considerably even before I got it tested. I'm now sitting on the low end of normal, where as before I was always borderline high. But now I get light headed much easier by standing up too fast, where as before I wouldn't. I was a little worried at first, but was told it was because my blood pressure was so much lower.

I can fit into size 34 jeans. Pretty sure I was in 9th grade the last time I wore that.

I've actually been wondering - the main reason I cook any meat (except chicken) in normal meals is for the flavour from the bones. I've been using cuts that are rather more bone and less meat because hey, it's what I want and saves money, but I'm not actually sure what effects that has health-wise. I mean, nihari (which is basically marrow soup) is really on the heavy side, but I normally only cook my lamb for 2 hours max. Mh.

I've also apparently been losing weight (or so people tell me) on a diet with a lot of lamb, cheese and ghee. I don't even know how that works. Smiley: dubious

Well, I'm floating between 180-185 right now. Focusing on keeping my intake at or under 2000, shooting for 1800 (1500 total for meals and the rest snacks). I end up eating a bit less during the beginning/middle of the week and fridays a group of people at work get together (myself included) and order a bunch of Sub sandwiches. Even at nearly 2000 calories a day I am still losing weight, a good 1lb per week.

I bought all new clothes today. I got tired of wearing my old size 38 jeans with a belt, and the *** almost hanging down to my knees. I comfortably fit into a size 34, and could probably fit into 32 (just don't like jeans that tight).

Everyone around me has commented on my weight loss. Almost 80 lbs so far. Today when I was at the store trying on the size 34s, I opened my wallet and looked at my old work ID and drivers license photos. I do look very different. Back when I weighed 260lbs I didn't think I looked that big, but comparing myself then to myself now, it's a huge difference. My face and neck are much thinner now.

I had thought about it, but I'm not up to posting photos of myself online. Even my old facebook account is photo free.

Is it a self conscious thing or a paranoia thing? Because both are moot this day and age.

Combination of both, probably. Really just left overs from when I was younger on the internet and wouldn't give out much information at all about myself.

That's really awesome Tirith, congrats. Smiley: smile I've been losing a bit of weight myself. I'm down 18.5 lbs since the start of January, from 158 to 139.5 lbs. I haven't weighed this less in about 4 years. I still want to lose about 30 pounds or so, but we'll see how things go. I'm not super committed to that number, it's just that when I was in high school and weighed the least amount (115) I still had a belly on me and I'd like to see if I can get to a point where I don't have a belly. I figure if Jillian Michaels can do it, so can I. She was fat when she was a teen, for people who didn't know.

Mostly I've just been counting calories, using the website loseit.com, which I found via the Chrome app store. They've got an app for android phones too, which is nice for when you're on the go. I've also been exercising a couple times a week, though I'm working on trying to increase that amount. I do some yoga, some dancing with the Just Dance Kinect game, and some weight lifting/circuit training. I'm sure my meds for ADHD probably have helped some, but I do think my diet changes and exercise are most of it.

Anyone have any invites to Fitocracy? It sounds like a neat idea but they're still closed to the public.

Oh hey, this thread was started four days after I had my last cigarette. Not a single puff since. Unfortunately, the combination of a super sedentary lifestyle coupled with a desk job 40 hours a week started to make my muscles weak and atrophied (for lack of a better word). It started to get to the point where it was painful in my legs and lower back when even walking short distances. I joined a fitness club in February and have been doing weight training and short bouts of walking on the treadmill. I am now about to go attempt a 30 minute walk. I have my calorie intake down to a daily reasonable 1000-2225 and am not feeling too bad or hungry.

My goal is to be in decent enough shape to go disc golfing daily as that is my best shot at faster weight loss in an enjoyable manner.
