So I've been named one of two groomsmen for a friend (with the other being the best man), and I'd appreciate all the help I can get in making sure everything goes as well as possible. I'm going to be asking family, friends, and wikipedia for help as well, but like I said every source is helpful and I do value your inputs.
The wedding is at the end of October. I've already asked the groom for a list of specific details that the bride has planned which are atypical for a wedding (for example she wants us to wear ties she has picked out), so hopefully I'll have that and all I need to is best understand the general duties of a groomsman. The bachelor party is already in the works with the bestman, but I think a lot of the details are still fuzzy. I guessing it would be best to rent a hotel room and host the party there, as neither of our residences are adequate.
I'd appreciate any experiences or tips you would have to share. If you've ever been part of wedding coordination what didn't you expect that you should have? What are some great do's and do not do's?

Your duty since you are not the best man is simple depending on the wedding. Usually involves seating some people, walking a bridesmaid up the aisle and dancing with said bridesmaid at least once. Will have to stand there for pictures. Walk into reception again with said bridesmaid. Usually you don't have to worry about the suit/tux as most people rent them so it isn't like you need to go out and buy.
For the bachelor party don't waste money on a hotel room unless you are going out of town. Go to a strip club as you have less planning then if you throw a party and you are not responsible for cleaning up. Do make sure you contact them in advance though and inform them you are coming in for a bachelor party. They usually will do something special for the groom.
All in all just have fun, the day is really for the bride, you are there as a decoration.

Just remember to do what your instructed to do. Which is not much at all. Even a Zombie can be a groomsman.
It's your duty to help kidnap the bride before the wedding and lead her side of the family on a wild chase through the moors, iirc.

As a groomsman, your job is to just be there and be told what to do. That's my experience anyway. The best man is the one with the responsibility; that's why they get the fancy name.

They don't really have many responsibilities either, actually. Planning the stag party, maybe keeping the rings safe, MAYBE picking up other tuxes than their own. That's... really about it. Depending on the services used, groomsmen might be asked to pick up stuff, I guess. But that's generally organized for delivery from the start, to minimize headaches.
Honestly, most duties for the wedding fall to the Maid of Honor, and that's only because the bride has 60000000x the amount of stuff she needs to do to get ready. :P

Ours was kind of awesome. He talked about how my husband saw me walk into class in the sixth grade and told him that he was going to marry me one day. He was funny, and the speech was short, which always helps.
From the weddings I've been to, the best speeches have been short and funny. People don't care for drawn out melodrama.

If you just want to be a groomsman, all you have to do is go with the groom/best man to rent your tux, and be there on the day of the wedding and do what you're told.

I do appreciate all the comments, because you've all helped lower my anxiety quite a bit by informing me that I basically just need to show up and have fun.
But I'm not getting married.. oh.... oh :(

I'm somewhat dreading the bachelor party, as I originally intended to suavely avoid certain activities, which has now become more difficult.

You may also act as an usher, walking the parents/grandparents to their seats. Other then that, ummm try and sleep with one of the bridesmaids.
