Bank of America Corp. is dropping its plan to charge customers $5 a month for making purchases with their debit cards, a person familiar with the situation said.

The move is a dramatic retreat following decisions by several rivals in recent days to drop customer tests of the new fees. SunTrust Banks Inc. and Regions Financial Corp. also said Monday that they will stop charging customers for debit-card transactions.

Bank of America decided against the fees due to negative customer feedback on the plan and the moves by rivals, which left the Charlotte, N.C., lender as the only big bank planning to levy the fee on some customers next year.

I'm really not surprised by this. They should have known that a lot of folks would just pick up stakes and move to smaller banks and/or credit unions. Now I don't have to switch banks, yay!

Yeah, the customer base they were specifically targeting are exactly the group with the least to lose by transferring banks.

I heard, however, that they were raising other fees. Like monthly fees if you don't keep $x,xxx in your account every month.

I think Wells Fargo is dropping the fee test program as well.

I'm with BoA and right now, our checking account is free as long as there's at least one direct deposit of $250 per month made. Not saying they can't or won't change that, but hopefully they'll leave it alone.

I'm sorry to hear you're with Bank of America. Smiley: grin

It's getting silly all of the rules they're making up to get your checking account free.

I've really never had any issues with them. I know a lot of people have, but I guess I've been lucky.

For me, it was something that happened through work. If I had one personal account with them, it probably wouldn't be a big deal.

They've been fine for me too. Some very minor/nitpicky issues (I had an incorrect $1.50 balance on a card, which turned into a $1.50, credit when I tried to get it removed. It took like two months to finally close it out), but those're to be expected with a big company. I like the convenience of the locations, and they were easy to work with in Europe, too. The local rep I deal with is friendly and helpful.

I haven't had to deal with a paper check in a long time, but when I did, their ATM is better than just about anyone else's. You can deposit checks or cash and the machine scans it all so you can't lie about how much you're putting in. And as long as it's in before 8 p.m. that day, it's credited to the same day.

Yeah that's great. I use it for my expense repayment checks, and I've never had an issue with it.

Sometimes I do wish that they had that "take a picture of your check with your smartphone" thing that Chase has. Anyone ever used that? I wonder how well it works. Seems like it'd be ripe for fraud, though I'm sure they've got some sort of measures in place.

I was about to say that my bank has the same ATMs with the scanners and just bothered to look up what the BMO in Harris BMO stands for. Bank of Montreal. Go figure.

How sad is it that I'm relieved to learn my bank is owned by Canadians?

Shouldn't be sad at all. We have excellent banks, which in a large part, is due to the quality of the banking regulation. Last I checked, our banks came out relatively unscathed in this world economy meltdown, by comparison to most others.

That's pretty nice. As far as I know, the only bank here that does it is BoA. And I'm expecting them to come out with the smart phone deposit at some point. All the other cool kids are doing it...

My co-worker banks at Regions. They backed off the $5 debit card fee, but are now charging a $10 monthly fee if you don't have either direct deposit from your work, or a $1,500 average monthly balance. our office is small, two partners and 4 employees, so they won't be implementing direct deposit any time soon, since the bank charges for that, and it's not really worth it for them.

Edit: Not =/= Now. One letter makes all the difference...

Today's kids will never know how (or be able) to float a check.

I was always amazed at how I could write a check for Noah to take to school to pay for lunch, pictures, etc. and the damn check would hit the bank the same day. Back in the day it took almost a week!

Back in college, I kept $40 floated between two banks and a check cashing counter at the grocery store for about a month.

Those were the days.

When they first came out with debit cards, the one at my bank was considered a check card. Which meant if I used it, even at an ATM, it wouldn't actually debit my account until about 4 days later. So when I was getting a little low on cash I used to take the check card to the ATM, withdraw about 20 bucks, then stick the ATM card in, withdraw another 20-30 bucks, and the 20 I took out with the check card wouldn't really come out of my account until payday.
