I thought I was the thread killer here - my response is generally (not always) the last on of the thread. :)

On a bright spring morning in 1945, a small white dog was gallumphing along a small gravel-lined path through a well-manicured lawn. He made fairly good time for a dog. He occasionally paused to sniff at a patch of flowers, or perhaps to chase a butterfly. Birds chirped. A bumblebee buzzed lazily by. The dog continued.

He was on a mission.

The little white dog, whose name was Sergeant Mumphries, approached the gate at the end of the path. He passed out of the lawn, between the well-manicured hedges, passed the well-manicured English gardens, near the well-manicured Soviet nuclear missile silo, and promptly began to bark.

He licked himself for a few moments.

He barked some more.

The well-manicured lawn did not respond. The well-manicured hedge made not a peep. The well-manicured English garden hummed slightly, with the buzzing of honeybees.

The well-manicured Soviet nuclear missile silo, however, did respond.

Sergeant Mumphries barked, then chased his tail. A large intercontinental ballistic missile roared out of the well-manicured Soviet missile silo, and tore into the atmosphere.

Sergeant Mumphries went home, his mission complete. Later that day, he ate some kibble, and rolled on some dead worms in the garden.

......

Thousands of miles away, a silvery disk-shaped craft was zipping quietly through the sky. Most people would have mistaken it for a perfectly ordinary flying saucer, but this one was special: it had a large swastika on it.

It raced for awhile over a rugged, frozen landscape, and then landed. Several red-clad, gas-masked figures emerged from the craft, also with swastikas. They planted a flag in the hard frozen ground; black swastika on white circle on red field. ****.

If anyone there had spoken German (other than the ***** with the flying saucer, of course), they would have heard the following:

"Ve claim zis land, ze south pole of Antarctica, in ze name of ze Fuhrer. Heil Hitler!......Oh, scheisse!"

This last exclamation, which loosely translates as "What a bothersome situation," was followed by a tremendous white flash, a miles-high column of heat and smoke, and a shock wave big enough to clear away the storm that had been threatening to cut loose.

......

The well-manicured Soviet nuclear missile silo quietly closed itself up, and became hidden once again.

Sergeant Mumphries chased a squirrel, then later dreamed of chasing squirrels. He had had an awfully busy day.

Well, I am German, so I can totally proclaim that German. Actually, that particular thing happens to sound exactly the same in German and Urdu, so there.

What is weird here is that people will randomly write Urdu in English script, or English in Urdu script. Sometimes there's a billboard that's 100% in English but half of it is written in the wrong script. So I'll be like okay, let's read this! and then end up very surprised I know all the words...

Personally, I'm shocked my knowledge of non-latin based scripts was enough to pick up on that not being arabic, even if only in that "My eyes want to say arabic, but my instincts say no, something else that uses the same or similar script." Not that I was able to pick out Urdu, arabic/persian based writing systems are the ones I have the hardest time differentiating between.

If you use the same font, they look identical... except Urdu/Farsi has more letters. Which might or might not come up.

Qur'anic Arabic is different because it has vowels and stuff, but generally the main difference is that the standard font is different. I think the kaf-alif combination might also be different.

Sindhi is hilarious because it has so many different sounds that they just put dots there in really weird ways.

I've actually done tajweed (Arabic pronunciation classes) with an Urdu letter chart before, so the difference isn't really there. In fact, the only letter in that up there that isn't in Arabic is the last (left) one... Smiley: lol

For three long years, the ragged girl scrounged, skulked, and scraped around the jumbled, foul-smelling junkyard. For three long years, she survived, solely on rats, and the remnants of lunches nicked from the infrequent scrapyard pickers that appeared from time to time. For three long years, the girl merely existed.

Until he came.

He stood upon the roof of a half-crushed Le Baron, looking down upon the girl's makeshift shelter with inscrutable grey eyes. He wore a long brown duster, had pale skin, and his white-blond hair was pushed up into a wild tangle by the leather blast goggles he wore across his forehead.

The girl wasn't even aware of him until the light of the newly-risen sun glinted off his brilliantly white teeth with an audible "ding!"

"Wh-who are you?" she asked in a raspy voice. It had been long since she had spoken.

"It doesn't matter. Let's get out of here," he said in a low voice. A million ******* girls squealed in excitement around the world, and they didn't even know why.

"Ok...." she said hesitantly. Between scrounging for rats and strangely attractive strangers, she thought, she'd take a chance.

"There's just one thing I should tell you," he said, looking deep into her eyes. "I'm part vampire."

"JESUS CHRIST A VAMPIRE!" the girl screamed, and she jammed a stake into his chest. The next day, she had two rats for breakfast.
