This reminded me of the Mythbusters episode where there tested whether it was better to hit someone with a full beer bottle or empty beer bottle. Obviously full won out, although the empty botle does have the advantage of turning into a makeshift shiv when it finally does break.

Hitting them over the head, sure, but the last one where he throws it and you can hear it bounce off the pavement? Sounded a lot like steel on concrete. Have yet to meet a bottle of liquor that did not break when I dropped it. Don't ask.
