For those who didn't know, I've been living in Gainesville, FL for the past three and a half years. Not a bad place, University of Florida is huge, and has a lot of cute girls. Problem is, it's a college town, and I'm increasingly not interested in the vibe of the place. All the friends I make tend to leave within a year (as they graduate), and the late-20s social scene is almost non-existent. Great place to go to school or raise a family... terrible place if you're in between those two stages of life. Plus, folks outside of the college tend to be like this guy.

So, for the past few months I've been looking for jobs outside of Gainesville. My first choice would be in Tampa; it also has a good university there, and my best friend and his fiance live there so I already know some people. Plus... it's a city! There are things to do besides university-related stuff! Lots of pluses; they even said I can move in with them until I find an apartment. That is, of course, provided I find a new job there.

To that end, my lease expires in 3 days and I haven't continued it. I'm moving down to Ocala (~45 drive), into my parents' place, rather than trying to find a sub-leaser if I hear from a job. My parents are thankfully on vacation until late September, so this gives me some time to focus on job hunting. I'm still working my current job and commuting, because I'm not about to quit in this economy. Maybe I'll get lucky and find something... but if not, I do NOT want to live in Ocala when the 'rents are back. I've decided that if I don't get any job offers by the time they're back, I'll bite the bullet, move back to Gainesville, and get a place for another year.

So, what do y'all think?

What do we think will happen to Locke?
He'll find a new job in Tampa by September!:4 (20.0%)
Come September he'll still not have heard back about a job and will move back to Gainesville:1 (5.0%)
Come September he'll still not have heard back about a job and will live with his parents:7 (35.0%)
Locke can't even keep a plant alive and he's gonna be on his own for a month and a half? He'll be dead within a week!:8 (40.0%)
Total:20

Where is the "Locke will float to Cuba on a makeshift raft in order to get a better life" option?

No zombie option, so I went with the right one.
Good luck!

Procrastinating again? Be happy that you still have parents that would let you move back in with them!
Instead of finding issues with the college crowd? Perhaps you should try to adapt more and maybe attend school?
If you keep going the way you are going you will never find that right place to live. Every place you move to has
it's own share of issue and problems. I suggest trying more to adapt to the place and moving on with your life
and job.

Oh and I can't find the Zombie Apocalypse option?

I had no idea you lived in Gator Town. I'm going to have to stalk you now.

Oh yea. My grandpa lives in Ocala. That whole town is like a mystical forest where no one under the age of 70 lives.

America has a "two-speed economy" at the moment afaik. The public sector, and the private sector that services the public sector, is DEAD right now. But the PRIVATE sector is going strong. So strong that there are more jobs in America right now than there were before the 2009 crash. Look hard in the private sector, and I'm sure you'll get something in a reasonable timeframe.

As said, Gainesville is great if you're already married and starting a family, or are going to school. Otherwise it's a bust. The University is wonderful to work at, but I have several coworkers who have been working there for 10+ years, are in their late 30s, and have no significant other. Every one of them agrees that it's a terrible place to find young professionals, because outside of working for the university there are no real jobs. And most of the people at the university are, as I said above, students or starting families.

Hence why Tampa appeals to me; there is still university work there, but it's a city as well; there are many more people in private sector jobs than public sector. Which is also where I should be looking.

Also, half the plants in my parents' house are dead already. I maintain it's not my fault, but the fact that the person watching the house since June didn't realize he was supposed to water them Smiley: glare

What type of job are you currently doing in Gainesville and do you have a degree, if so in what?

Answer those questions and I may be able to get you an interview in Tampa.

Indexed to the start of the recession, more private sector jobs have been lost than public, but your overall point is correct. Recently, private sector jobs have increased, while public sector have decreased (not a bad thing IMO). So looking to the private sector is the correct thing to do.
