I can't say I've ever seen large birds in a flock until today. I can't say for sure what type of bird it was. It wasn't a vulture or buzzard, it appeared to be some sort of eagle or hawk. But I've never seen eagles or hawks mass together beyond a couple. I was in my room watching a movie and I see a large bird fly by the trees outside my window. Then another, same type. Then two more, then three more, then another one. In the end I think I counted 12 of them. About half way through I walked out to my porch to see if there was actually only a few that were circling. But they weren't. There was really just a bunch of these large birds flying away in a relatively straight path.

Had I seen any animals on the ground running in the same direction I may have decided to pack up and leave, fearing an earth quake or flood. But in all seriousness it felt very strange seeing these large birds all flying together like that. I've never seen it before.

might have been a canukistanian goose. They are quite large. not vulture large, but a vulture doesn't look like an eagle either.

If you want terror, look at a field a flock of canadian geese has stopped in after they pass through berry country... Poopageddon.

My dad lives right in the migration route of greylag geese, when a whole field of those fly off at once they make a hell of a noise, like a bunch of helicopters taking off at the same time.

You don't think too highly of me, do you? To think I'd mistake a goose for a hawk or eagle... I am saddened.

No, these were large, light brown in color, almost solid light brown. Sun was shining so the wing feathers were almost transparent. No long necks to speak of. The first one reminded me of the hawks I used to see around when I was a kid, but I never saw more than one or two of them at a time.

Huh, apperently there is a type of hawk that flocks when it migrates. http://www.hawkmountain.org/raptorpedia/hawks-at-hawk-mountain/hawk-species-at-hawk-mountain/broad-winged-hawk/page.aspx?id=655

Or maybe they were really short geese?

I remember back in elementary school I was standing at the bus stop outside my house, early winter morning, fairly dark outside. Sun was just rising. Looking down the road I see a little critter run across, probably a squirrel or chipmunk. Then I see an owl blast across the road just above the ground. A couple seconds later, a brown hawk. Then a moment later half a dozen crows.

That hawk creeped me out when I was a kid. When ever my friends and I were out in the woods around the neighborhood, that Hawk would follow us. You'd look up and it would be in a tree staring down at us. We'd walk around a bit, look up, and it had followed us, perched in another tree, staring down at us again. There's a large chunk of wooded land in front of my house, that's where that hawk stayed most of the time. That's also where I saw these birds fly by. Looked a lot like I remember that hawk looking, just a bit bigger.

There's a hawk or two that lives on my local golf course. I swear, it likes to hide in a tree near you, wait until you're mid-swing, then let out a banshee screech from hell. Still, they are pretty cool. One dropped a dead mouse onto the fairway about 20 feet from me.

My mom tells a story of how, when I was around two or three years old, I tried to kill a bald eagle with a stick. It was in our yard. We lived in a National Park, for extra lulz.

Yes, some raptors will flock up for migration. I've never seen it. Here's another article.

I don't think most of the raptors in my area migrate - maybe that's the norm across much of the country. So we don't' often seen migrating flocks of Birds of Prey. I'd like to see a squadron of owls.

Hawks are kinda awesome and kinda scary.

Awesome: back in college I was leaving my dorm and a hawk was chilling in the grass next to the door. Well, not chilling; it was busy tearing up and eating a squirrel. Every time a student came near, he would just look at the kid with an expression that basically said "Yeah, this squirrel is mine. You better move along before I finish. I might want dessert."

Scary: Walking to work a year or two ago, a hawk swooped out of a tree and plucked a squirrel up from the ground a couple of feet away from me. My heart practically jumped out of my throat.

Speaking of squirrels and college...

Back in college I was walking between classes. I was headed down a path lined with these really tall trees; the canopy was probably 40-50 feet up. It was a nice quiet sunny afternoon. All of a sudden I hear this unholy jittery scream and some frantic scratching. I look up to see this tiny object plummeting to the ground. This object turns out to be a squirrel which hits the sidewalk a few feet in front of me with a ugly-sounding thud. After not-even-a-momentary pause the squirrel gets up and darts towards the nearest tree trunk with what looked to be an incredibly painful limp, then disappears up into the tree tops once again.

One of the more surreal moments in my life.

That one was revealed to be fake. I thought the mouse one could have been faked too, but I didn't care enough to investigate.

Yesterday afternoon I was doing dishes in my Kitchen and looked out the window, saw four of these same birds flying around. It was very windy, so they were hovering very low (just at the tree tops, maybe 30-40 feet). They had their backs to me, and it still appeared as if they were hawks or eagles. But then one of them swoops around and faced me, hovered in the high winds. I noticed it's ugly little head tucked back into it's shoulders.

They must have been buzzards or vultures. Turkey vultures are big in the area. The color seemed very off to me though, they were almost light brown, and their heads were not, or did not appear to be, red.

I just looked it up, and interestingly (to me) buzzard has come to mean vulture in the Americas, but across the pond it refers to types of hawks...
