What's with keyboard changes?Follow

#1 May 01 2013 at 9:49 AM Rating: Decent
As a person who upgrades computers pretty regularly (every ~3 years, both at home and at work), I've noticed a disturbing trend (or anti-trend?) regarding computer keyboards. It seems that manufacturers no longer feel tied to a standard layout and have begun "customizing" the layout for their users. As I look at my new keyboard from the computer I set up last week, I immediately notice the following annoyances:

* The left CTRL key is now a FN key, and the CTRL key has been moved over one space.
* The right CTRL key is no longer right aligned under the shift key, but is about 2 key spaces to the left.
* The left arrow key is now under the right shift key.
* The standard INS/HOME/PGUP and DEL/END/PGDN layout has been replaced by a HOME/END at the top, an enlarged DEL button on the left, and PGUP/PGDN under the END key. The INS key has been moved to the right of the PAUSE key.

As a programmer who uses all of these keys pretty regularly, I find these "adjustments" incredibly unproductive and counter-intuitive. Yeah, I could just go back to using an old keyboard, and I may very well do that, but I'd rather they just stop mucking with keyboard layouts altogether. WHY DO THIS?

What back alley in China are you buying your keyboards? Smiley: dubious

I bought my keyboard 2 years ago (Logitech G510) and its your standard layout (with macro buttons on the left side). A quick snoop around the Logitech website showed the Bluetooth iPad/tablet keyboards to have a sort of setup you're suggesting. But the normal PC keyboards all look the same to me.

Are you sure it's not a backup keyboard for laptop users?

You will be assimilated.

Also, you don't have to upgrade your keyboard simply cuz you've upgraded your box. You can probably use that same old keyboard until the fap-juice holding it together bio-degrades into roach snacks.

If everyone has 4 arms, I don't think having 4 arms will make you a good crime fighter.

I just wish they would bring back the original Microsoft Intellimouse Optical 5-button mouse. I bought a couple refurbished ones off e-bay recently, but they aren't as nice as a new one. Have never tried another mouse I liked as much. (Although I switch to a Razer Deathadder for FPS gaming).

Combination of flame resistant combat uniform and tactical dragonskin. And pouches. Lots of pouches.

Not true. Most people can't properly use the 2 arms they already have.

I can't remember the brand (Acer or Asus), but some of their laptops made the left shift smaller to put a slash key to its right (just beside the 'z'). It's almost like I have to learn how to type again.
