Ok...I posted a question in one of the FFXI forums about IGE and copyrights. When I posted that I had a rating of 3.05 and my name was in the yellow, scholar it was I believe.
I check back a week (about) later and all of the sudden I got a rating of 2.02. What? Why did I get rated down so badly? Was asking about copyrights really some kind of taboo thing to do? o .O
Does anyone really take Karma seriously on this site or are there people who just like to ***** with everyone's ratings? How many people does it take to rip a rating down like that so quickly?
o. O
I wish there were some sort of explanation you had to give if you rated someone down. >_< I really don't understand what I did wrong.
I'll give it a try, I'm bored at work...
When you start you get a default rating of either 2.0 or 3.0 But I cant remember its been too long.
After 30 or 50 posts, if your average karma of all posts is above 3.0 you become yellow Scholar.
As your post count gets higher and higher, your average karma will be harder to change, and many of the new people who come here dont know that they need to kiss serious *** and not post in any thread where some kind of debate is taking place. Otherwise your Karma will be shot right to begin with.
However, if you only post in non-controversial threads, and manage to get a good Karma rating, be it Sage or Guru, you still need to be careful. Some people feel it is thier job to make sure un-deserving people dont gain this status(Un-deserving in that individules opinion) and they will continue to negatively camp your Karma.
Your thread about IGE got ragted down because people in the main forum have seen 100+ gil-sellers threads. And as some people exercise their choice to skip the thread if it bothers them, other people arent quite as mature. So because you posted a repetative thread, people rated you down.
It can be your first post, but if you havent spent the time to research on your own, weather or not you have the premium search function, or even have no clue how to get to page 2, the people in the FFXI forum will first respond to your post with "Beating a dead horse" jokes, then complaints/insults, and by reply 20, it has become a joke thread where the popular people will say stuff like "I like Cheese" all the while complaining about your IGE post that should have been put in a different forum, or not posted at all. Because even though you have 1 post ever, you are still an idiot for being new and not knowing everything, or how hostile this environment is.
Some people realy do care about Karma, until they get slapped in the face enough to leave, or complain about it and get nuked, or give in and be one of the "I dont care about my Karma" fan club.
If someone with a high post count and high status like Guru rates you, I believe it has more of an impact than a Scholar with 100 posts.
In my opinion, the majority of the community is way more likely to rate a person down for anything they even slightly disagree with, often skip right over the good informative posts without a thought of a rate up. People will next to never give a reason for a rate down, more or less just do it because they can.
So, my advice to you, kiss serious ***. Don't ever post in any thread where opinion is involved. Never mention Karma. Be like some other people here and make a friend and agree to rate eachother up for every little post you make. The army of Kefka was good for that. Once you get to 1,000 + posts, you can start to have an opinion, but even at 1,000 posts your not safe. Hell, you should probably throw out that account and start over.
Good luck to you. I hope this helped a little, and welcome to the community!
