Formal Appeal of Karma Rating & SuggestionsFollow

#1 Jan 17 2005 at 11:45 AM Rating: Sub-Default
I am formally appealing ALL of my Karma ratings that I have received to date. This is completely serious as if I am not satisfied I will not only delete this account, but I will post all the information about the Karma system "flaws" that everyone but the admins seem to be aware of on other forums (GameFAQs, KillingIfrit, IGN, etc...). I want to see WHEN the ratings occured, WHY they occured (admins need to look at the posts and come up with a LOGICAL reason), HOW many ratings based on level, and WHAT impact each rating had to my average rating.

Many may think I am being totally selfish, but I am actually doing this to IMPROVE the quality of the forums IMMENSELY by making the admins take responsibility for the system that they designed, and showing them how all of this information should be available automatically to ALL users. Note that I didn't include WHO as that still should be admin-only to avoid retaliation. So the admins are probably wondering how they could implement this "update"...

First, I believe that the admins have the tools in place to look up all of this information upon request (as I hope will be demonstrated in this thread). The key is to allow the users access to most of this information automatically and to create (or modify one if one already exists for the admins) an output screen to display it. The reasons will come from the USERS, as they will be required to give one (from a pre-defined list) whenever they rate a post.

Ever since I created this account and gained (now lost) Scholar status I have seen the many flaws of the existing system first hand, and every day when I look up information and then go to the FFXI main forum it's like good vs. evil (good info vs. evil forums) and I hate pretending to be evil. The above solution will only fix one problem: the lack of accountability, but there are other problems such as the lack of a purge system, which both affects the Karma system (the more posts an account has, the less impact the ratings have) and the entire web site (you're adding more and more servers because there's so much wasted space in the database). I notice that the forum "version" is "2.11", but a "3.0" needs to be developed, and future versions could improve navigation, interaction, and even allow more features, such as appealing ratings to admins and purges based on ratings.

Finally, if the admins decide not to fulfill my request (note the suggestions are NOT included in the ultimatum) and I leave, I hope that they will leave this thread untouched (it may get rated into sub-default anyways by the users), and perhaps they will consider implementing the suggestions even without me, and others can add to them as well. Remember, I am doing this to show the admins how to transform the forums into a better place for everyone by allowing users to see detailed information about their ratings. The suggestions will let users see this information automatically, plus add a purge system so that less space is wasted, which in turn saves money on buying servers.

Guess what no-one cares what you want implemented! Perpetually whining about something as insignificant as described in your post will get you nowhere in life and certainly not here.

Try this instead, SUCK LESS!

Do you really have that fragile of an ego that rate-downs on a FFXi forum, that you feel the need to know the who and why of the rate down? Guess why it happened, because you suck at posting, thats why.
Get over it and try not to suck, and then just maybe you will get that scholar status you crave for self-validation.

I should know because I suck. Smiley: wink2

Couple of tips:

1)As long as you are above the sub-default setting, you really shouldn't care about your rating. It is just a number, it does not represent your worth as a person.

2)See that link right next to the version number your quoted? Click on it, and you will see that that this board is not the center of the admins (or in that case Illia's) life. They all have other stuff to worry about, and all of it is more important that your beloved karma.

3)Have you noticed how there are no moderators? Well, if you said yes, you would be wrong. Every user is a moderator, and that was the main intent of the karma system. Since I have joined this board, the only people I see complaining about karma are my (sad to admit it) fellow ffxi players. The karma system was never meant to be a popularity contest.

4)If you have these great and wonderful ideas on how to fix the karma system, why don't you do it yourself? Instead of expecting someone else to go and fix everything, you can sit down and write all the code necessary to impliment the changes you wish to see, and then send Illia an email to show said code.

5)This is just a little communication tip. When you are writing a letter (which you did here) to someone, in hopes of getting them to do something for you, it is usually a good idea to avoid demands. If I was talking to you face to face, and wanted yo uto wash my car, would you rather me say:

A) "You HAVE to wash my car. I expect nothing less than PERFECTION."

or

B) "I realize that you are busy, but I would like to have some help with an issue I have. My car is really dirty, but I don't have the ability to clean it myself. If yo uget a free moment, would you be able to help me out?"

6) Do you honestly thing your threat of leaving the board is going to make anyone loose sleep? If you want to leave because you can't be "teh uberz guru" then go ahead and leave.

So in gengeral, you need to learn how to talk to people, not get your panties in a bunch over some random number, and get over yourself.

Get premium, go to your account, look up your posts. It tells you the karma of each post you have.

See? The Admins don't even need to get involved.

But yeah, your post here? A waste of time.
