I will not be renewing primiumFollow

My premium membership is up in 3 days. I would like to renew, but I feel that I should put my money where my mouth is. For the duration of most of my membership, bookmarks have been down, as has forum search.

Not having bookmarks is annoying, but forum search is one of the biggest to have a premium account. Two of the three months that I've been a premium member this function has been down and nothing has been said or done.

Forum Search temporarily disabled due to high load.
This is the only information we've been given, save for the faint hope that, with the new servers, search would be enabled again. Well the new servers have come and have been installed, but we still don't have search.

If you are working on fixing this problem please let us know. Just leave a little note on the News page, or on the main forum. I love this site and would like to continue supporting it, a little communication is all I ask.

Edit: misspelled premium in the title >.<

Ditto the above.

I want the search working as much as anyone but they're working on it and hope to be done soon. Issue One was the server load in general. Issue Two is that searching for common strings (say, every instance of the word "that" in the FFXI forum) would freeze up the entire server as it returned results. They've got to fix that somehow or else it won't matter how many new servers they've got.

As folks have said, there's been multiple threads on the topic. We all want search back. That said, if it's that important to you, stop paying. No sense in feeling cheated and bitter.

I guess you can either look at the functionality that isn't working, or the fuctionality that is.

Frankly, bookmarks are something you can still do using your internet browser.

As for the search function, yeah, it's unfortunate that isn't available.

However, regardless, there is still a ton of information, and given how much I use to forums to make my work day go by and how many times I'm here accessing NPC locations or quest information, I feel the site deserves the incredibly low amount they ask for premium.

It IS putting my money where my mouth is...but paying for a site I use quite a bit.

We did get the new servers in and they are hooked up. We've even activated the forum search a couple times as tests. The problem is that people search for broad terms like "level" or "gil". This brings the whole site to its knees as it forces it to create a table of 200,000 posts. Until we can figure out how to stop this type of searching, it's either a working site or a forum search for a site that crashes constantly.

Can't you limit the search to finding the first...say 100 posts? If that limit is reached throw in a warning that the search term is too broad?

I dunno how the coding is, but that's how a few search programs I've encountered run.

I am not sure if you guys are using SQL, but you can definitely limit it. When a user commits a search, have it do something like:

SELECT topic__ FROM whateverforum__ WHERE Subject__ LIKE '%$key%' LIMIT 20;

Then you could let the user know if they would like to see more possibilities they need to put in a keyword that is less broad.

Or even possibly set up data caching based on this common keys?

Thank you very much for your response. I'm thrilled to know that you've been working on this and, now that I know the situation, understand why you can't give a specific time as to when it'll be back up.

There are are 6+ main forums, alla isnt a ffxi site
Good point. Perhaps a better idea would be to change the message from "Forum Search temporarily disabled due to high load" and adding something like "We are currently addressing the situation." Just a little extra line so that we that something's being done. I would have assumed that it was being worked on, but after so long, faith wavers.

The ironic thing is, I'd know this if I could search Smiley: tongue

Once again, the response from Allakhazam is greatly appreciated. Thanks to the rest of you as well for your information.

Tried turning a newly tuned forum search on this morning.

I promptly locked up 2 servers, which took most of the day to undo.

I'm sorry but it's going to be a little while longer before I can make it accessible to anyone.

LIMIT doesn't help us, since the way SQL works is it first grabs everything, sorts it by newest like we want, then just chops off the 20 you want. So it grabs and sorts 200k posts anyways. And cacheing isn't feasable because of the amount of crappy queries people can run, and the speed at which new posts are added.

I've actually seen their servers... in a sense. There was some documentary type thing on 60minutes (I think) about google.

Lets just say they have probably 50x more than other sites. I think they said something like a warehouse in size, all with servers. Somehow I doubt allakhazam has that.
