Bad Loading Times for Allakhazam.comFollow

#1 Oct 23 2005 at 2:01 PM Rating: Decent
Hi mates

since a long time i have very bad loading times on all allakhazam pages. Im using a 6mbit DLS connection and always have good loadingtimes on other sites but allakhazam. Problems Appear with IExplorer and with Mozilla and Firefox too. Nearly 95% of time the sites get stuck for 30-60 sec while loading (Receiving Data from everquest.allakhazam.com) on Bestiary its the same. Im Premium Member and Adds are disabled but the loadingtimes are really bad.

Any suggestions?

Today at least, the load times are due to issues on our end. The site is under extra heavy load because three idiots from Poland, Czech republic and Virginia are spidering the entire site and bringing it to it's knees. It's almost DoS attack level, except they are nto just hammering the same spot, tehy're just trying to steal our database.

Find them, torture them and kill them until they die.

They shall not mess with my favorite WoW site!

Based on your IP, you appear to be posting out of Deutschland on an internet service provider that is in my experiance not exactly the fastest in the world. Also, our serves are located in pensylvania, quite a distance from you so you are going through several routers before getting to and from our site. That will degrade performance sometimes. You may wish to talk with your ISP and find out if they are aware of any connectivity issues between you and us that would be causing slowness. You might also look into an inline cacheing program. they degrade web page graphics, but they will give you faster web page loads if you are only after the Data.

Also, particularily on patch days, the site here does tend to get a little slow sometimes.

One other possible issue, every day at about 0200 PST, the site here undergoes server maintenance. While that is the middle of the night for us here in the U.S., that is if i am doing my math correctly, about 1000 local time for you +/-. If you are connecting during that time, you will generally experiance some slowness.

Well, my "not the fastest" Service Provider doesnt have to be the fastest Service Provider but it seems to be enough to get all those other sides in the World to load fast enough.... Except Allakhazam. That your servers are located in Pennsilvania doesnt have to do anything with the problem, i dont speak about miliseconds, i speak about sometimes 20-30 seconds... my connectivity to japan is better that to Allakhazam. In about 10% of the times when loading stucks and i hit reload button, the page loads instatly. Sometimes it seems that im queued in a Wait loop. Based on this i asked some friends and guildies and guess what they say... they said Allakhazam isnt the fastest site in the world. The mostly expect the same issues with very bad loading times but since they are mostly not premium members they didnt say anything.
No need to cut graphics or else, as i said i connect between 3.5 and 6 mbit, should be enought to get some kb loading faster than 20 secs.
Issues appear the whole day , not only on patchdays or severmaintenance.
If loadingtimes contiunue like this i would be Premium Member the longest time and will have to cancel my membership.

I'm in Florida, use DSL, and still have poor loading times sometimes. And if FFXI is down for maint, you can expect 30-60 sec loads the entire time. But since this is my favorite FFXI site, ill endure the loading times.

I'm in Cali on DSL and have the same thing... You admins need to stop trying to blame this on the user's internet when 99% of the people who browse this site seem to have the same trouble. There is a thread on the WoW boards where Illia said something about a DoS style attack... then left. The thread continued on (I lost track of it though... so maybe an admin re-visited) with pretty much every poster saying the same thing:

"I load slower on Alla then any other site"

I sent a message to illia about a possible cause and such... but, never heard back (not that I really expected to) and the problem still presists...

Oh, btw, it ONLY happens when trying to connect to the DB... You can't tell me that you have DoS style attacks pretty much 24hours a day... as I log on at some strange, and some peak, times with the same problem.

Where you are in the world has nothing to do with it, because when I access my account from my mother's computer in Pennsylvania, I had loading problems where I have to hit the Refresh button at least 10 times.

I am also having similar problems. General site unresponsiveness. Have no problems browsing to other sites and have experienced this problem on computers conencted to different ISPs.

The following is a copy of my traceroute. Hopefully, this will help someone address the issue. This traceroute was taken from a computer connected to a 5mbps cable modem connection:

Tracing route to wow.allakhazam.com [216.155.41.213]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

Trace complete.

Update: Just to give an idea as to the slowness I am encountering, it took 15 seconds for me to bookmark this post.

Anything you can do to address the issue would be great. Thanks.

Notice the jump in 7 and 8:

Quote:
7 11 ms 21 ms 9 ms ae-1-53.bbr1.LosAngeles1.Level3.net [4.68.102.65]
8 78 ms 76 ms 77 ms so-1-0-0.mp1.Philadelphia1.Level3.net [209.247.8.69]

That says to me that the problem is pretty much on alla's end...

After a quick tracert on my end... it also seriously slows down when it gets to Philly.

The important part:

Quote:
Tracing route to allakhazam.com [216.155.41.199]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

7 15 ms 15 ms 16 ms ae-1-53.bbr1.SanJose1.Level3.net [4.68.123.65]
8 136 ms 85 ms 149 ms so-1-0-0.mp2.Philadelphia1.Level3.net [209.247.8
.65]
9 85 ms 87 ms 85 ms ge-11-1.hsa1.Philadelphia1.Level3.net [64.159.0.
154]
10 86 ms 86 ms 85 ms NUNET.hsa1.Level3.net [209.246.200.162]
11 88 ms 87 ms 88 ms FGL-PHIL.nni.com [216.107.27.69]

Again, when it leaves the local area, we see a VERY large jump in ping.

I also have been having extremely slow loading times for a number of months now. I am in Illinios and have DSL. I am not having this "lag" on any other websites or internet connection "situations" such as playing EQ. I have talked to many other people in my guild from all over the US and they too have said the web site is doing the same to them when searching or trying to access the database. It has sit at the "transfering data from..." 20, 30+ seconds and half the time it finally loads and other times it says "Done" with a "blank" screen. The Link are still present on the left and the header at the top. Sometimes I am able to get it to load by repeatedly hitting the refresh button.

We're aware of the issue. It's simply system load being higher capacity than our servers can serve at the moment.

New servers are on order and should increase capacity significantly.

I have been coming to Allakhazam for a long time now for all the WOW info I need, and my connection to this site up until a couple weeks ago was fantastic.
I use this site dozens of times EVERY day, and I'm a premium member, so I am concerned when all of a sudden my connection here turns to CRAP!

Well I ran several tracerts to try to find out if the problem was on my end or yours, and the results speak for themselves:

That's great news to hear for such a wonderful resource.

What is the current timeline to the new server deployment? I can understand that no firm date may be available but if you could give us a ballpark figure, that'd be great. Thanks.

PLEASE tell me that these servers aren't the ones that you ordered months ago. Hell, lie if you have to. >_>

Hello, I'm not a premium member but I'm also having nasty problems with load times. The site seems to get stuck when loading an ad...it just loads and loads and loads. I thought maybe it would be solved if I bought a premium account, but I'm guessing no based on other posts here. I'm relieved to hear that it's not just me and hope they get the new servers soon.

Any updates as to a timeline for the installation of these new servers?

Ads will actually slow your loading down even more as they are loaded off site. The loading hasn't been as bad lately, but i've been browsing mostly in the middle of the night.

Nov 14. I still have to spam the refresh button a dozen times to get the page to show up 99% of the time. When is this going to be fixed?

Thanks for the response about the issue Illia. I hate to pester, but might you have a rough idea when the problem might be resolved? My premium renewal is coming up and I'd like to know before I pay for another year. :)

This problem is still ongoing, still continuing and still there seems to be no resolve or message that it is being addressed.

Being a Premium member entitles us to certain benefits.. However as much as I enjoy the benefits of this service I begin to wonder if it is worth the extreme delays I am experiencing. I am in Australia, I raid with people in America, UK, etc.. They are all experincing a similar problem and their frustration of such is becoming vocal.

We require this to be looked at and addressed.. When are these new servers arriving, when will this be corrected, fixed and rectified.

Apologies how this is coming across but I have waited enough time for action and so I am now voicing my concerns

Thank you for your time.

Spamming Refresh will do the opposite. The HTTP server will get more requests so it will try to open more child processes to manage these requests.

Wonder how hard it would be to manage two copies of this DB so you could run another server for just premium users.

Gah all this talk of servers is making me want to install the new Dell machine I ordered. I've been lazy >_<

Nothing changed till now, Premium Membership cancelled till loading times get significantly better.

Hi,

I notice the site is slow most all the time too. I live in Long Island, NY and I'm on Optimum Online.

Most searches will say 'Done' at the bottom, but no information is displayed in the body of the page!

Also, and please understand where this is coming from, approach this from the standpoint that hey, maybe your customers are right. If you come across each post trying to pass the buck to our local ISP or whatever, it appears you're being defensive for no reason. That's generally not a good way to communicate.

So please look into this and if you need help just ask us. Thanks.
