The drawback is the loss of screen space on the right, even if an ad doesn't load. (We have to reserve the space to make the page layout properly, or else the ads can end up overlapping the text, which is worse).

Our advertisers contractually demanded that we move the ad "above the fold", hence the change in placement. I much preferred it on the left too, but oh well.
