Several posters, including myself have decided to use their journals for forums this site doesn't offer.

Perhaps you all could make a listing of peoples journals that are public and could be use as alternative forums for specific reasons. You could call the list as "specified forums" or whatever. Point is it would offer a specific forum for a multitude of different interests and would require next to NO work on your part as the owner of the journal would essentially be the moderators.

It would be as easy to set up as this. You could even break it up into categories.

While I like Rimesume's idea I would even try to push it a full step further and suggest that more popular subject specific journals just be made into actual forums. They would still take up the same server space anyways right?

For example Vataro's journal is the unofficial Anime forum. Now as much as I love Vataro, being a forum that only 8-10 people know about does hurt discussion. It has only been up a short time and already has three pages (compared with the Fantasy and Scifi forum that has been up forever with 4 pages) and is only known to a few people. If it were made a listed forum I believe traffic would significantly increase (nerdy MMO gamers and anime geeks are an often overlapping group); I highly doubt it would be any less popular than scifi fantasy forum. I believe the site would benefit form the increase in traffic not only generated from ad revenue, but because anime geeks are loose spenders who would easily buy premium just to have a scene/character displayed in their avatar.

Darkenbuddy's automotive forum has received a positive resposne as well (though it is still very new).

For a site as large as Allakhazam to only have six non MMO related forums is rather unusual. OOT usually gets lumped full of related threads that could very easily fill a separate forum of their own.

There used to be a Journal Listing, not sure where that went. I remember that from when the FFXI server forums were hosted in journals before Alla made them official.

Allegory brings up an excellent point. If more people knew about Vataro's Anime Journal, more people would post Anime there and I'd see less of it on the forums. I wouldn't see it and they wouldn't see me ******** about. Win-win, no?

This won't happen.

Isn't the argument that for them to be listed they would need to be moderated properly? And that there aren't enough admins to keep track of all those journals? I don't think a journal's owner could really be trusted to do it.

Allegory's idea works though, I guess. Maybe there could be a poll to see if there was actually a real want for the new forums. And then of course the admins would have to decide if they had the time to moderate them.

I'm not really sure if splitting up the OOT into separate OOT subject specific forums is a good idea at all to be honest. The OOT would just die eventually if that happened, there really aren't enough posters there.

Saying that, a shocking number of FFXI players are also anime geeks, so I guess that forum could work. But a car forum? I can't see that doing anything but slowing down the OOT.

The old journal list went away because there are just many many public journals now and updating the list even automatically was taking up a huge amount of computer resources. I too would like to see it come back though.

Well, now that an admin has disproved my theory, I should point out that I pulled that paragraph out of thin air Smiley: grin

More Anime fanboys in the OOT then car guys. Plus all we do is confuse the OOT anyways.

Doesn't matter what you do, people will always go into the OOT because that is where most posts come from anyways.

Besides, Asylum has a couple car people, as do people in every forum. It's a win win really.

I dunno, I'd like to list people's journals again. If we can figure out how to direct people to the best ones.

Sounds like we need a 70+ page to list all these people made server forums. The 70+ pages from 'bumping' the thread since it isn't stickied of course.

Then we get to have multiple threads that reach a couple pages each time from bumps and then get locked while making a new one every week?

Slight bump, because I'd really would not like this thread to die.

Please communicate with us what the problems are. While many users here could not offer assistance with any of the technical issues (such as programming), I think we can offer suggestions on implementation issues (a listing of all journals is infeasible, so we might suggest a work around, such as only listing popular, user voted listings).

Perhaps the userbase could come of with a variety of ways to effect special interest forums, and the staff could look through and determine if any are possible and profitable?

Well, we have journal ranking, category and journal hit count, so something could be calculated from those to make a list of top 500 journals per category or so, maybe with some additional categoriesthe voteing system should help, because its one vote per registered user account, but the views might be suspect to shall we say, tampering unless they were locked down to unique.but somethign could definitly be made i'd think.

Or you can set it up as "Most viewed" or "Highest Rated".

Gooose, the journals would be moderated by the journal user and they should be monitored if made public by the owner.

private journals wouldn't be on the list. Public journals are primarily user moderated, but admins can and do step in if things get out of hand.

Could you simply keep track of a list of the top 10 or so journals as voted by the users?

I see a list of 500 journals having the same issue as no list of journals. They fight for attention from one another and it is difficult to find one that may or may not exist for the topic you desire.

My suggestion would be to keep the list small. Have users suggest topics for forums/journals and then vote on the list to decide the most popular forums. Then simply list the top 10 or so.

Some example dedicated forums could be:
Automotive
Anime
Movies
Sports
Philosophy/Religion
