The worst thing about it is the word 'shit'. It's not even used to describe defecate, or the act of defecation. Considering I only use it on throw away threads, and from what I've seen, there are avatars that are probably more objectionable, can I have the green light to upload it again?

Whenever someone hits the "Report" button beside an image, it disappears until the admins have a chance to look at it and deem it ok or not. If you just posted it and it disappeared, that's probably what happened.

No change in moderation philosophy has happened to my knowledge. If you're referring to the hellboy incident, I wouldn't call that a crackdown. Allakhazam servers were used to display (bad) ****, an account was banned. It doesn't happen much, but I'd call that normal.

No, just learned of that incident last night. Mainly just referring to avvy stuffs, such as Rime's (which has been reinstated) and my family guy one. Just seems like a few admins have been tightening up a little bit. Meant no offense whatsoever.

Images, when they are uploaded have a flag setting as new. Admins have a page which lists all the new images with all the reported images in there too. Stuff doesn't tend to stay in this state for very long. Most (99%) of images are approved and protected from reports. This includes the ones reported.
I'll try to investigate what happened with your image, but it wasn't reported after being up for 3 weeks.

The answer is quite simple.
The 'APPROVAL DENIED' button is a lot flashier and cooler looking than the 'APPROVAL GRANTED' button. How could you not choose that one?

Guess I'll step forward now that everyone has had a turn with their opinion. I saw the image in a thread in FFXI main, and thought to myself "hmm... it's got sh*t in it, that's bad, isn't it?" and took the initiative to delete it.
I still haven't found this magical page full of new/reported images, so bear with me. I'm still making noob-min mistakes. I apologize for jumping the gun, but in my mind, having that pic in a large thread, in =10, just seemed like a bad place for an image with sh*t in it.

As a rule we try to keep =10 as a safe playground for youngsters, which is why if I see swear filter breakage, I edit it. Imo, just make one with "crap" instead and have your regular **** one for OOT/Asylum usage.
Speaking of images.. Lubriderm's avatar looks like a photo of someone who commited suicide by jumping of a building and landing VERY awkardly...
