To facilitate searching, every article should have at least one Category tag.

Every article needs to have at least a game tag, specifying General when there is no game attached. (Like the FAQ, for example)

There is no normalization enforced, so the category names need to be standardized.

FFXI - Category:Final Fantasy XI
Wow - Category:World of Warcraft
EQ - Category:Everquest
etc..

Without this tag, articles may not end up being properly searched.

Within each game's category space, additional tags should be added as necessary.

You can find the list of categories for World of Warcraft here.

Note that all categories other than the generic "Category:World of Warcraft" category have a (WoW) tag at the end -- or whichever game you are putting a wiki page up for. This is important because categories have the potential to overlap, (such as an FFXI classes category and an EQ2 classes category) just like basic pages have the potential to overlap. The Wiki as a whole is currently considered one big entity, so it's important to include these tags on your pages and categories...and having done a few pages myself, I know how easy it is to forget, which is why I'm bringing it up here.

(NOTE:Editing this to change to how we are doing it NOW. My original plan is toast, here is how it is now)

In a perfect world, there would be no name collision between the games, but there is (especially between everquest and eq2). We want to try to ONLY use disambiguation suffixes such as (EQ) or (EQ2) or (FFXI) when we HAVE to. When we do, there should still be a page at the root name with a section for each game that needs it pointing to the correct disambiguated name.

An example is Wizard. Every game has Wizards. In EQ2 we are listing all things Wizard at :Category:Wizard (EQ2 Subclass).

All skeletons should be members of Category:Skeleton (EQ2 Mob Race). This is handled by some automatic tagging.

Category:Skeleton (EQ2 Mob Race) will in turn be a member of Category:EQ2 Mob Races

Generally speaking, suffix tags like the Skeleton cat above will only be used by automatic linking (i.e. from a template). All Mob DB pages store their Wiki text under the same name we use to link to the page. Likewise, the automatic template for EQ2 mob db pages is Template:EQ2 Mob

For example, the Skeletons above are in the Mob DB. The namespace for all Mob wiki pages is EQ2 Mob. A link from a wiki page to the DB page would be like EQ2 Mob:a dry-boned skeleton. A template, Template:EQ2 Mob, would be processed for tagging by the wiki but does not generate any output (well, it COULD but that is another rant). Using the parser function {{#db:eq2|{{PAGENAME}}|race}} allows me to auto-link this record to Category:Skeleton (EQ2 Race).

Oh, and btw, most EQ2 templates contain a category tag for Category:EverQuest II so you don't have to add it. However, for pages that don't have a template you can add {{eq2}} at the bottom to do this for you.

Just to correct, FFXI should be categorized as Category:Final Fantasy XI

Looking for a bit of clarification on tagging pages properly. If it is mentioned somewhere I can't seem to find it.

For FFXI wiki, when making a new page I add the tag Category:Final Fantasy XI, my question is which tag should I be adding so that the search feature (left hand menu) picks up the page? I tried inserting a few random tags and none seemed to work.

When I type in "Aries" the search function finds the wiki information and a tab becomes visible. If I type "Conserve MP" no wiki info is found. I did try the following : Category:Final Fantasy XICategory:Spells & Abilities, but it did not work. :(

Any help would be appreciated.

There is a list of current categories at Category:FFXI Categories. If you create a new category please add it to that page. Any time you do Category:New Name the wiki will create a new category. There is a problem with some characters, & being one of them. Try Category:FFXI Spells and Abilities or just Category:FFXI Abilities

The latter would be better, because there are FFXI Ability: tags for all spells and abilities too. like FFXI Ability:Conserve MP

I still can't type conserve MP into the search function and have it hit the wiki page :(

Edit: Nevermind,I figured out that I have to type Conserve_MP into the search function, not Conserve MP to get a hit.

hmm. I don't think it is supposed to require that. I'll ask a dev about it.

think Rale may have found a problem. Are you using the general search over on the menu? If so, that one requires the _ for all wiki entries. If you use the Wiki Search (which is still in the process of being built) you can type in just Conserve MP, and it will find a lot of pages that contain those terms.

Example search

Special:Search Wikisearch

The two will be integrated together hoplefully once the rest of the kinks get worked out.

Yes I was using the search function over on the menu. Thanks for clearing this up.
