Why do you have to pay here? (was forum=21)Follow

#1 Nov 29 2007 at 7:32 AM Rating: Sub-Default
Why do you have to pay in order to upgrade your account here? All other sites I use don't charge you in order to use a avatar and signature etc. Surely Allakhazam makes enough money from advertising etc.

Just wondering.

Well, when you pay you not only get an avatar, sig and other little benefits, you also get zero ads.

So thats what you pay for.

That's the biggie. But I would feel faceless without an avatar, tbh.

Its the ONE thing that makes me want premium. lol. I've stumbled across a lot of good avatars and have thought about it.

Yeah, chatting with you hasn't been the same since you lost the "Cat beating the baby" avatar.

I logged into Zam the other day from a friends house.

There were enough ads that I got really angry.

I <3 no ads. Also as said above, avatars own. The sig banner is cool too :)

No ads is always a plus, although with adblock I don't see any, but that damn placeholder ad frame thing is still there and it pisses me off. Must...get...Premium...once...I...gets...enough...money. Curse college making me poor!

There are plenty of sites that don't allow you full access to all of their features without paying for premium.

Allakhazam started the premium membership explicitly because the site wasn't making enough from just advertising. He added things such as avatars and expanded search capacity to make a paid membership more attractive.

Anyone can have a signature.

By the way, what's the "Etc" you're thinking of? Allakhazam LLC makes money through ads and through paid memberships. It's not as though they're keeping the site alive via t-shirt sales and Amazon click-throughs.

Insert my obligatory comment about "people ******** about $3 per month for full access" being ridiculous here.

3$ a month was too much, so I pestered them enough and they made me an admin.

True story.

I've always thought f it as going without a Big Mac combo or something somewhere in the month, and having some change left afterward.

I started using this site about 4 years ago and found myself coming here for the majority of my EQ needs. Allas supported my needs so I felt I should help support the site.

I guess that type of thing doesn't mean much to people nowadays.

I'm the same way. Before I started working for Alla, I used the site from way back in my EQ days and finally started paying for the premium since they provided so much for me game-wise.

To be honest, I haven't felt the difference yet. Firefox + AdBlock + NoScript ftw.
