So after listening to the mog house and hearing a lot of names being butchered, I wonder if it might be a nice idea to have a link to a wav file of someone sayig the names for items, zones, and npc.

As nice as this would be, there are some people that are completely stubborn about how they pronounce things.

For example, one of my rl friends pronounces Xarcabard "ECKS-ka-bard"... when it should be pronounced "ZARK-a-bard"; I've corrected her dozens of times, but she refuses to say it right.

This is the reason why I don't like using skype or ventrillo, mispronounciations irk me.

"Qufim" = "Koo Fim"

There's no damn 'i' after the 'u.'

When in doubt, look at the nice phonetic japanese spellings. Qufim is koo-fim or kuu-fim.

Did you ever stop to think that maybe you're the one pronouncing them wrong?

good point, neesh. I actually habitually refer to the Japanese names of items or locations in order to get pronunciations correct. sometimes, it's just the only way, as some of the location/item names just don't have a logical English pronunciation

I'd take that over "kwih fum" Its to the point where people actually spell it "Quifum" on the forums now.

I think as the replies to this thread suggest, it would be next to impossible to get agreement on every pronunciation, also who gets to decide what the "official" pronunciation is - in the absence of any phonetic guides from the developers each item/place/npc's page could well end up as a discussion on the pronunciation of such-and-such.

It's an interesting idea but one I think will create more problems than it solves.

As long as they don't start pronouncing it something like "***** im" it won't bother me to the point of obsession.

I swear one day there were all of a sudden new letters added onto the names of places:

Ogrimmar turned into Orgrimmar
Trisifal Glades turned into Tirisifal Glades
etc;

Maybe I was just being lazy in reading. It totally screwed me up for a long time...

Wait... isnt Orgrimmar really well.. ORGrimmar?

And Im pretty sure its Tirisfal glades, not trisfal, not tirisifal.
