Demise of the karma systemFollow

Could anyone explain to me the use of the karma system?

I mean, how can some sockpuppet with 25 posts become scholar just by posting the same drivel every other sockpuppet posts, while long-time members of the community that missed the rate-up threads get stuck on default...

I'm not expecting to be sage... but I don't like being grouped with the 1-15 postcount crowd just because my 3k+ postcount makes my karma inert... I doubt even a working Eruntalon's Code-like revealing (including YouTube footage!) would budge the meter now...

Seriously, what's the point of this system when a new account reaches scholar in a few minutes of posting popular crap...

Perhaps, rather than wonder why a new poster can become popular quickly, you should examine why a long-time poster such as yourself can be stuck sub-scholar?

From what I can recall of you in the past, the karma system is working as intended.

Users w/ 15-25 posts drop in average karma as fast as they can gain it as well.

It's not biased towards people w/ high post counts, unless you have more than 10,000 posts or something.

It's not biased to us either. I want sage or guru but I'm never going to get it. Smiley: lol

I am pretty sure the karma system didn't used to count non rated post towards the overall rating. It was averaged on actual up/down ratings and non rated posts were given a nil value.

I believe it was done that way to counter people that were post farming in the hidden forums.

It could have been changed when the hidden forums were finally fixed though so who knows.

I think the karma system and the ability to rate people should be disconnected.
Tie it in to the star rating.. 2+ stars can rate up/down. That leaves the karma system to show how [noobish/popular/usefull/popular & usefull] the poster is to the community.

I don't know that I'd want the ability to rate tied to the ability to makespam a certain number of posts, personally.

What I need is a weapon to cull the weak! I'm sure 4-star sub-scholar Kerberoz would want one too!

I can think of no better reason than that to keep things the way they are

I never asked to be scholar'd or saged. I didn't karma ***** or kiss up. I *did* try to make witty and humorous contributions in joke threads in the main FFXI forum, and a lot of people from that thread rated up my posts there. I think that's how a lot of us got bumped up. But I also make an effort to supply useful information without being an *** to anyone, whether it's requesting a hangover cure or specific information on a difficult quest.

Maybe someday I'll be guru'd, maybe not. In the meantime I'll just try to contribute to the dialogue in the most meaningful (or funny) way I can, just like before.

The karma system is working as intended. Those who artificially inflate their karma are dealt with. If you have over 1k posts and are sub default, either suck less, or embrace your abrasive and likely unplesent posting style that has caused people to rate you down so long.

Thread done.
