Moving OOT threads to the Asylum.Follow

This is a copypasta of something I wrote in the OOT. The relevant message to the admins is in the second half, and I bolded it.

Quote:
I think that this sort of issue is not entirely an either/or thing.

One of the parts of being socially literate, especially net-literate, is to realise that the net is it's own social-subspace, and the social rules are very different. As people have already pointed out, people WILL be nasty. If you have an area in your life you are at all sensitive about, for your own sake you have to just not bring it up ever. You have to be in a very heavily protected and extremely closely moderated forum for things to be otherwise.

In my own experience forums that are only "on" at set times of the day are more likely to be like this.

If you love this site, and want to stay posting here, you also have to resign yourself to the fact that this site has explicitly stated that it's not heavily moderated: in fact the karma system for POSTS is there as a self-moderating function. Things that offend a MAJORITY of people are theoretically rated Sub-default, and that rating of sub-default is supposed to appease the masses.

The admins are going to protect us all as much as they can, and think appropriate, but they have a limited budget, therefore time to do that in. Their protection here is limited.

However I also think that it's completely beneficial to have a separate Asylum and OOT. There's so many of us that want to play hard, and there's so many of us that want the entitlement of protection in a space with "civilised limits", while they have chats over general topics.

Also, the separation of the OOT and the Asylum gives a place where the 13+ rating of this entire site can be enforced, while giving the adults a "withdrawing" room to go let loose in.

I have thought for a long time that OOT behaviour has gotten beyond OOT rules. I have happily participated in this breakdown of OOT rules, I'm aware of that. I liked the freedom of swearing and writing about sexual content in the Asylum, but got bored when it started slowing down in there, and moved my activities into the OOT, without modifying them too them much, especially later on.

I'd both be very happy and very sad for the OOT rules to start to be enforced more, but I htink it's a good idea if they are. I think it would be entirely appropriate for many OOT threads to be moved to the Asylum, and if that is done, I'd like the Admins to make it clear to any Asylumites that they can't complain about OOT stupidity being trashcanned in their space, because this is also part of the role the Asylum exists for.

If OOT threads are moved into the Asylum as being more appropriate there now, then I'd definitely want them to remain unlocked. It would just be completely frustrating for them to be locked.

I won't move the stupid ones. Those would just get nuked. And sometimes a thread just needs to be locked in place.

Perhaps I should have gone with Smiley: laugh instead of Smiley: nod?

Rating down Joph would be like throwing an icecube into the sun to cool it off.

I just rated the Pangolin down to see how it would feel to chill down an ice cube by throwing it in the Sun...

It's not as much fun as you may think, surprisingly. Smiley: frown
