I have for over a year been visiting the site with a ppc6700. This is one of the larger faster mobile phones on the fastest wireless network. The download speed is fine, it's the redraw time that sucks. Whatever settings this forum uses slows a mobile phone to a crawl.

It has gotten worse. Sometime last year, an update on this site caused the main text window in every post to redraw in a single word column (to fit in the existing window with large margins). This is a forum of wall-of-texts, but on phones they are 50page long lines of text.

On a positive note, the edit window works fine.

Is there a way to make a setting that is mobile phone friendly? I've seen some auto-detect sites out there, but that might be tougher. Over the years, I've read other people struggling to use their phone. I know I'm not the only one using the site this way.

I meant to post this the day that change happened, but was distracted. A particularly long wall of text reminded me to post today.

There are a number of different mobile phone browsers out there, and it's not really feasible for us to develop a mobile-specific version of the site, or test with all of the various browsers.

I can tell you from my own experience that opera mini does a passable job of rendering the forums.

I'll try that browser tonight to see if it works better than IE.

I was just going to post something similar to this. That's too bad about not being able to build a mobile version of the sitre, I wonder how google does it.

I can actually explain this one!

See, the problem is that some mobile phone browsers don't handle nested tables as well as they could. For whatever reason, Illia's designed the forum system to nest tables something like 5 levels deep in the HTML.

So: Fixing this for mobile phones isn't just a matter of whipping up a separate stylesheet, it's about having to produce the HTML entirely differently.

Keep it up guys. Anything that slows Craftertrash's posting is a good thing!
