The outage occurred as I was trying to upload a story, and I was sure I had done something horribly, horribly wrong!

Glad we're back!!

So, are you still under siege? 'Cause it still seems off and on to me.

More off than on. This is attempt #3 for this post...

DDOS attacks aren't something that you just stop. It's like a flood and you have to stop it by building up a brick wall to protect yourself. Until you have every little hole plugged, some of the flood is still going to get through.

So what is a "DDOS attack?"

I remember when it happened on Final Fantasy XI awhile back, not fun.

Distributed Denial of Service, they basically flood your servers with requests and bog them down.

Basically a denial of service attack, (I'll probably get this next part wrong...) but they basically flood your servers with bogus requests to the point the slow to a crawl and become unusable, like we experienced the last 8 hours or so...

So what is a "DDOS attack?"
A Denial of Service attack means that someone is flooding a server on the network with a large volume of invalid traffic. Routers and other pieces of network hardware have physical limitations on how much data they can process, so a large enough flood will make a piece of network hardware (a router, for example, or a web server) unable to respond reliably to legitimate requests.

A DDOS attack follows the same principle, but instead of generating the traffic from one central location, a network of compromised systems (this is one of the reasons you scan for malware and viruses) is used like a giant zombie army to bombard a network resource with traffic from myriad different IPs and routes.

they got the banhammer! nah, could be any sort of stupid reason that people do anything... I mean why do people make viruses/trojans other than to cause problems for people.

Anyone else getting forum load errors when switching between pages? I have to hit refresh after almost every load.

I was a sad panda when I could not do my normal bleary eyed wake up check of the forums this morning.

How does one respond to a DDoS? I know an attack from a single point, you block the source. Is there anything you can do for a distributed one other than duck and cover?

Set up the router your servers are behind to deny any connections from the sources that are DDoSing you.

If you've got outgoing bandwidth to spare, and a router that allows it, you could try having the router bounce the packets back to everyone who's DDoSing you, thereby essentially causing the attackers to DDoS themselves, but this isn't always possible or feasible.
