I was at work on one of them long breaks and nothing to do but twiddle my thumb.
So I'm there surfing this forum, on my mobile, and it seems to work well.

So I though, why not do a wap version of this site/forum.
Somthing more mobile friendly?

Programming resources?

Edit: bah multi tasking with one hand = booboos!!

I am sure it was discussed previously and I believe we decided the programming resources would be better spent else where. However, if there was a massive need for WAP, I am sure we could bring it up again. As I access the site with my 8125 often, I wouldn't be against it in anyway!

The best mobile solution for viewing this site currently is the Opera mobile browser for PDA phones. It can at least render the site reasonably.

Yeah, I also have a problem with this. The forum is basically unusable (I use a PSP).

How's it look in an iTouch? Been thinking of getting one, but I don't know anything about the net on it.

Theophany posts regularly from his iPhone and does not seem to have issues.

The news skin works really well with the iPhone, but the other ones are kinda cluttered. Posting from an iPhone is a little more clunky, but that's not alla's fault, that's the iPhone's size and setup.

Posting from an Iphone isn't really all that bad now...especially since all the ads went away when Premium got enabled. :)

By the way...

Posting from the Wii works great too!

Not that that's portable.

Although I am not sure what the programming resources were used on, I would think the first thing (or at least a high priority) would to be to focus on a valid website (at least by W3C standards).

First, if you just put one of our page's urls into the w3c validator, it'll be loaded with ads, which include code that's out of our control and pretty much guarantees some errors.

That isn't to say all our html is perfectly valid, but it's pretty close, and it's designed and tested in the standards compliance modes of the popular browsers.

... not that this has anything to do with the question of being more mobile device friendly, which has more to do with dealing with tiny screen sizes.

I'm able to browse the forums on my PSP if I use the news skin. On ones with a sidebar, theres just too little remaining screen real estate, but without it, it works fairly well from what I can tell. You may have some trouble if you have to give up more space to ads, but there's not much we can do about that. I've also had decent luck using opera mini on my phone, and it runs on any phone that supports java.
