WARNING! beware "you have mail" ad!!!Follow

#1 Apr 18 2008 at 5:55 PM Rating: Default
there is an ad that pops up on top that looks like a notice that you have mail. well, like a dummy i clicked on it and guess what? i got redirected to some stupid dating site! i immediately ran my spyware and virus scans. you should too, if you get fooled like i did.
alla, don't you people even LOOK at these ads before you allow them on your site?? this one was a low down dirty trick, and i am really mad about it. if this is a way to get someone to go premium so we dont get these ads, it backfired in my case. i will be looking elsewhere in the future for WoW info.
and yes, i did read the post about reporting bad ads. unfortunately, it was gone by the time i went back, and i had erased everything else quickly. your reputation has gone down with me. i now know how "anything for a buck" you all are.
thanks for the years of great info though. i really do appreciate that a lot.

its a choice between prem or using adblockerplus a feature that you can using firefox if you don't want ads.

You're blaming the staff for your clicking a link that was obviously bad news to anyone with anything resembling an IQ?

I think we've found the source of the problem Houston.

PROTIP: I seriously doubt your ISP puts in a "you have mail" image in a little inline ad.

Also, they have no way to look at the ads before they're given, hence why they ask "if you see a questionable ad, TELL US ABOUT IT". They want to know so they can blacklist those ads.

Perhaps I'm misreading your post but I don't see what the results were of your spyware and virus scans. Did they turn anything up?

As for misdirection in an ad, this is hardly the first case of it. What has always stuck in my mind is the ad campaign that Oliviero Toscani created for Benetton Group in the 80s and 90s. He used images such as a priest kissing a nun to advertise a clothing company.

In this case we have an ad on a website telling you have mail which is trying to show you that you too could have mail from a possible match from their dating service. Hardly anything new or shocking.

However, if the ad turned up spyware or any sort of virus it will be removed immediately but you have given no indication that this was the case.

However, because Allakhazam has so many pageviews, we employ a number of different ad networks at the same time. As a result, every so often an ad will slip through the cracks. In order to catch these ads and remove them from the site, we need the help of our users--since some ads only show in some countries, often we cannot see the offending ads on our own computers, and rely on user submissions to tell us when an ad has slipped through.

I think perhaps you need to read the above quote from the "report bad ads" post yet again. It is also worth nothing that I have seen the ad that you are so upset about and it has been running for at least two weeks. You are the first user to complain about it.

It looked to me like alla had updated their private messages so I clicked on it too.
arg.

Waited and did clicked on purpose when I saw it again today to get the address link.

here it is allakhazam.

It is very offensive so please get rid of it!

(for some reason I don't seem to be able to send alla direct mails so this is going to have to do.

Can you really blame people for not reporting something like this when they get attacked for it?

My first instinct when I clicked on it was to get out and run my virus programs. My third or so instinct was to tell alla and by then it was too late.

Oh please! Do you also believe the ad that says you're the 1,000,000 visitor and go off to claim your prize?

These sorts of adverts have been around for years yes they're annoying but anyone with an ounce of sense isn't going to click on them. Browsing the internet doesn't come with guarantees of safety, you're actually required to use your own common sense.

I don't see what this has to do with it, this isn't a link to a keylogger this is an advert which is a little misleading, yet entirely solvable by thinking about what you're clicking on.

The ad was misleading. I am not the only one who thought so.
Did you ever hear the old saying about you catch more flys with honey than vinegar?
Not that anyone wants flys but it really does work :D.

Have a good ad free day!

Actually, I was the first person to complain about it. It was in IRC though ;p

Because I figured the devs had changed the PM system announcements I clicked on it. Yes, I'm a n00b, no I won't do it again, and yes, I despise the ad.

Oh well.

Anyway, I don't get the point if this thread. Are you warning the admins that said ad is in fact an ad?
