System for regulating criticism in FeedbackFollow

Hey all. So I've had a lot of ideas for things I'd like to see in FFXI over the days. I'm sure most of us have. So when I take the time to type one of my ideas out and give it nice formatting and want some serious feedback, I'd like to have a way to denote that I'm serious about my idea and I want serious feedback.

What I'm trying to get at is that the feedback forums, for FFXI and Alla both, should have a system for regulating criticism. I've posted on a forum that had this before. The idea is that in the first line of the post the author tells would-be posters whether they're looking for some kind enthusiasm, ruthless constructive criticism, or just lulz. Most feedback topics get all different kinds of responses, but especially when it comes to serious ideas to improve the site or FFXI or whatnot the author may only want real criticism.

The system I propose is a scale from 0-6. 1 through 5 are the normal levels:

0 is for people who insist on posting joke topics. "I THINK WE SHOULD ADD PINK MAGE. IN BEFORE ARROW KNIGHT MAGE."

1 means that the author would like to have some kind, constructive, and maybe a little bit padded feedback. An example would be, "Hey good job, I love the idea! etc etc but you should think about ______."

5 is for harsh, ruthless, but still constructive criticism. This is for serious ideas that warrant advanced though and not "IN BEFORE BACON MAGE". For example, "Overall a good idea but needs serious work. ____, ____, ____, and ____ don't work and need to be changed. blah blah I honestly didn't like it." As you can see this author wants honest criticism of his/her work.

Anywhere in between you can use your imagination, but by default I think most posts will want a 3 for kind constructive yet still honest criticism. Also, to make it more appropriate for FFXI, we can assign one of the starter jobs to each level of criticism:
0 - Thief
1 - White Mage
2 - Red Mage
3 - Monk
4 - Warrior
5 - Black Mage

So anyway if you read all that congrats and I hope you like it!

So you're suggesting some kind of system....work with me here....

...where you can "rate," if you will, a post, based on whether you agree with it or not...

...and whether the post was helpful, rude, or funny...

I'm drawing a blank. I don't think it would work at all. Smiley: um
#5REDACTED, Posted: May 21 2008 at 9:50 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Erm no. This has nothing to do with Kharma. Authors of ideas in FFXI Feedback and Site Feedback forums can put in their post how harshly/seriously they want to be criticized.

I think it's silly to expect people to coddle you. If you make a suggestion and you think it's brilliant and you want to be complimented on it but other people see it as ****, then that's their right to tell you so.

Also, at least in this feedback forum, if someone deviates from the point, the admins usually nuke the posts.
#7REDACTED, Posted: May 21 2008 at 10:56 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) No the point is that some people want to have cushioned opinions and some people want brutally honest. No one should ever have to deal with trolls either, but then again I don't see much being done about that. Regardless I think there are some ideas that people just want to throw out there, and some that people want considered seriously. There should at least be an "official" way to do that much. Maybe having a scale is too much, though.

And people in hell want water.

There is no way for the admins to force people who want to criticize someone else on the forum to do it in a kind and coddling way.

But let's pretend that your idea went into production. So you label this thread a "1" and want people to shoot you with flowers and rainbows. What is going to stop others from verbally hitting you over the head with a mallet?

Nothing is stopping you from making a thread and putting a disclaimer at the top: "Only sweet and kind criticism, please, thanks!" At the same time, nothing is stopping other people from being ********.

The thing is with this site, theres always been a freedom of expression - people can (within reason) say what they think honestly, and its something users of this site get used to. If someone doesn't want negative comments about an idea of theirs, they simply shouldn't post the idea up for others to pick apart. Or, if I misunderstood you, and you just meant that while negative comments are ok but should be softer worded, then ... allas not really the place to post them. There are plenty of FFXI sites that do have very strict rule on how far you can go in a comment before its unacceptable, and someone who found the behaviour on alla too strong for them could always find other places to post .

But the whole thing there did make me realize why we need a system like this. If you go to my topic you'll notice how long it took for me to get a constructive response. I got maybe 2-3 of those total in 20+ posts. I really did want feedback but at this point I really doubt it'll happen.

I'd just settle for having people put a category to their ratings. Smiley: grin

Allow me to be brutally honest with you.

If you do not want people to respond unkindly to your ideas, do not post them on the internet. there is only one way to guarantee that no one will ever disagree with your idea or brutally criticize it if its bad, and it's pretty simple. Keep the idea in your head, that way no one will ever criticize it.

Except if it were baby photos, it would be like looking at before and afters of Michael Jackson. Only instead of turning into a white guy, he changes into a chick!

The internet isn't nice. I give this request a 0/10. Or, translated to X-Play fans: A 3 out of 5.

Pfft I agree. The more I post the more chances I get to be defaulted. So much for friendly forums, eh?

When you get upset because people criticize you, that's not the forums being unfriendly.

What your originally posted was a bad idea. That's fine, we all have those. Then several posters went on to explain to you why it was a bad idea. You were made fun of for creating this thread for foolish (selfish) reasons. Now you attempt to play the victim.

You are the one behaving poorly here FreeLanceFoXx, not us.

We're friendly enough.

Just don't post job ideas (this, really, goes for everyone!), as they invariably don't go over well with somebody at some point. Either you step on someone's toes, or you make it overpowered, or you make it worthless, and then people get a little happy with the rate buttons.

lol.. Well I really like the way the system is set. No need to change anything. If you post stupid, lame, rude, ect. you get rated down. The community(which you are apart of) judges itself ;-)
