This thread should probably now also be locked as it's not in the appropriate forum and as such is even worse than the original offending thread that inspired it.

The point is that =10 was not the place for a discussion on the subject matter to take place.
There are other places that are better suited for it.

When SE made marriage part of FFXI they made this discussion valid on a forum dedicated to general discussion (=10) of the game. There is no better place to discuss this part of FFXI.

I don't think there is any question this is censorship.

this is a privately owned forum. As such complete freedom of speech is not ensured; ToS pretty much state that if an admin finds your posts inappropriate for any reason, iz gonna get nooked.

People are uncomfortable with censorship and with good reason. No one questions the admin's rights to lock or delete messages. However, when we see it happening we can (and will) judge for ourselves whether it is justified or not.

...and this is site feedback, not thread feedback.

Well site and forum feedback.

Eh, at this point it really should just be let go. Within a month someone else will make a new topic for the admins to lock.

The problem is, it's BEEN discussed, and it ALWAYS ends the same way. Before the end of the first page, if it even takes that long, it ends up the same way every time. The topic quickly turns from whether two Mithras/Humes/Galkas/Tarutarus/Elvaan of the same gender can get married to whether two **** Sapiens, aka real Human Beings can get married. Human Beings/**** Sapiens are not an ingame race. The thread was no longer about an FFXI related topic (ingame marriage) but rather a REAL topic (actual gay marriage) and therefore was no longer game related.

If I started a topic of Apple Pie vs Wizard Cookies, that's FFXI related. If that thread turns into how to make REAL pie and REAL cookies using food from the store, an oven (no crystals), yeast, cookie cutters and pie sheets.. the thread is no longer FFXI related.

If you wanna debate gay marriage, do it in another forum and have fun with it. =10 is not the place to do it.

As for the actual topic of INGAME gay marriage, SE's answer was posted. Agree or disagree, they answered it. If you wanna debate INGAME gay marriage, send SE an email because they've already provided their opinion on it.

As for "censorship", this is a privately owned forum, wherein mods and admins have the right to censor whatever they like. If I want to talk about Charles (Chuck) Norris, I may not because his very name is censored. If I wish to talk about "items" belonging to someone of the "Monk" class, I may not do that either, because it's censored.

However, this is not "censorship", this is locking an out of place thread. If there were a discussion of Shadow Priest Talent builds in =10, that would get locked too (or moved). The topic was 2 1/2 pages beyong hading anything to do with FFXI anymore. That's why it was locked. Find a non FFXI forum and debate it there.

While the thread may have gone off topic, it was always more on topic than the thread "RL Worst Encounters" which is barely ffxi related. And "What do you want to see in their next MMO" isn't ffxi related at all. These threads have not been locked (as of this writing) so there must be more to this than how "on topic" the thread is.

I don't like the idea that joe user can convince the admins what the other users should or shouldn't discuss. If someone is offended by a topic they should get over themselves, stop qq'ing to the admins and provide something constructive on another thread. It's not like the thread wasn't clearly marked.

As a user I'd like the admins to be a little more transparent by saying something like "homosexuality is too divisive of the user base so we're locking this thread." Reading between the lines that is probably what they meant. Otherwise it might look like they just want to push it back in the closet. That is, make it clear that it is the users that are intolerant and not the admins themselves.

Incidentally, I've never actually understood what the item is that is filtered for monks . Could someone perhaps PM me, I've always been very curious ^^

As far as I've seen in the time using the forums, its very rare that a user will ask for a topic to be locked/deleted, and get what they wish . I've seen many many times people asked, and had their request refused, with good reasons given, by the admins.

And while the tread title made it obvious what the original debate in the thread was, it did quickly detract into discussing RL gay marriage, and although most users put across their points intelligently on the matter, there was potential for offence there the minute it veered from a discussion of the game to real life.

Regarding admins being more transparent - I don't think they need to be. I'm an admin myself for a board, and sometimes I've had to lock threads, or delete them. Sometimes I give reasons, other times I don't. An admins job is to do just that - admin . They don't have to explain every action they take, although they may choose to if they wish . Admins are very busy - especially on a forum such as this, with so many different sections, and they simply don't always have the time to to justify themselves to everyone.
