I cannot for the life of me figure out why this post is getting filtered:

No amount of editing or rewriting is bringing it back.

Weird.
I reformatted it and added a closing forwardslash at the end of the URL, that allowed the paragraph to remain together. Strange that it would have trouble parsing that without it...

Yeah, there are odd issues with the URL tags, specifically the one you found.
I can confirm that adding an URL can cause some very serious formatting issues. It's best to use the link tags to avoid that sort of thing.
