The site does not render properly in Windows 7 with IE8. There is a huge gap at the top with everything starting at Search Forums, above that the middle part is just a huge gap.

Switching to compatibility mode fixes the problem.

I believe the following Meta tag will force IE to switch to compatibility mode:

<html>
   <head>
   <!-- Mimic Internet Explorer 7 -->
      <title>My Web Page</title>
      <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=EmulateIE7" />
   </head>
   <body>
      <p>Content goes here.</p>
   </body>
</html>

Both pieces of software are in beta. We would not even consider modifying the site for compatability until the software goes RTM. But thank you for bringing that to our attention. we'll keep an eye on it.

Which stylesheet? (There are occasional rendering flukes on the "Your Posts" page with IE8 under XP - specifically, the page numbers sometimes end up on top of the banner, and the copyright/etc. messages at the bottom sometimes end up on top of the bottom two posts of a page, but this isn't consistent.)

This is without Compatibility Mode on, by the way.

FFXI stylesheet. I know MS are encouraging web sites to add the meta tag so when they do introduce IE8 they won't all break at once, but I've also heard IE8 is being delayed and entering Beta 3 rather than being released.

Okay, that's really odd, because I'm using the FFXI stylesheet as well, and I'm not seeing this problem at all.

It may be related to the "occasionally IE8 doesn't want to render blocks of text regardless of Compatibility Mode" issue that seems to crop up on occasion (though, oddly, never here); or it may be specific to the version that's included with the Windows 7 beta (if memory serves, the Vista and XP versions of IE8 beta 2 are distinct, and the Windows 7 version may be distinct from the Vista one - in which case it's more like "beta 2.1").

I believe it is, without installing IE8 on Vista I can't be sure (and I won't because its a resource hog on that), but Help>About gives version which is 8.0.7000.0, Windows 7 is build 7000 which matches the IE8 version.

So logically IE8 for 7 is a different version to IE8 beta 2, which in my mind would suggest that IE8 Beta 3 will gain parity with IE8 for 7, so many numbers, why can't they just call it something silly O_o

I don't think we're going to worry a whole lot about getting the sites working properly with IE8 until it gets closer to a RC. Far too much can change between now and a decent RC that could end up in a lot of wasted time and effort on our part. Just keep in mind that you're using a beta O/S and using a beta program.
