Yet, someone explained to him why they hadn't gotten back to him. It's not like he was blatantly ignored by every single admin on the site.

The devs are busy. Zam.com has been in the works for quite a while. A name change? Pfft. I don't blame them for brushing it off.

I'm guessing that in the several months between when Dana left and Angsty was hired, there was a lot of backlogged work for the programming team. This request really is no more important than giving people custom titles when they hit ten thousand posts. When the higher priority work on the site is sufficiently caught up, I'm sure that things that please individual posters will be looked into with more interest.

Cherried for truth.

The only reason I've not renewed my Premium yet (and the only reason anyone should have for not having Premium) is that I simply cannot afford it at the moment. As in, I can't even afford to be playing an MMO game atm, and I am going to have to suspend my account for abit until I can find 17 dollars to set aside to play again.

While your plight is understandable, the site has GOT to come first. The staff has been shorthanded for awhile now, and with Zam.com FINALLY launching, the people that remain doubtlessly have their hands full with not only their primary jobs (remember, for a lot of people this is a second job) but whatever time they can squeeze into this place as well.

It's not a plot against you and your name change, I'm sure. DF frankly doesn't seem like the type of Admin to yank people around for her own amusement. Kaolin, maybe. I keed, I keed.

Just relax, be thankful that the admins are actually here working, and renew. Doubtlessly, it will happen sooner rather than later.

Ah, once more into the breach then.

First off, I am thankful to DF for trying to help me, if I came off as unappreciative, I apologize for that. She's the one that pointed me in the direction of the devs. They are mainly the cause of this honestly. I wouldn't be so mad if I had actually gotten a response, even if that response had been negative, but flat out ignoring a paying customer is unacceptable for any business.

Secondly, Nio, I started playing FFXI in June of 2004, I also started using Alla at that time. I certainly wasn't much of an active poster in those days, and it was a couple years before I ventured into the OoT and Asylum, but I was around. I actually went looking for my old posts, but some of them don't seem to be there anymore, I'm not sure what's up with that one. Anyway, that puts me just about a couple months out from five years. You do know that FFXI has been around for seven years right? Just because you've been around a bit longer than me doesn't mean that I was exaggerating. So, once again I'll ask you to please refrain from making comments when you don't know what it is that you're talking about.

Deadgye, you're alright in my book. Actually, you seem to be the only person around here that understands the point I was trying to make.

Ugly, it's funny you should mention the contest, I just got an email today. No, I'm not kidding, I really did win. I haven't responded yet though, I have no use at all for the game cards, and I'm not sure I really want the clock, it's a bit silly actually. I'll have to make a decision on that and get back to DF in a bit.

I can think of other reasons why people shouldn't have premiums (mainly if this isn't their main gaming site or they don't care about the extras), but that's my situation as well. My premium expires in June, and I'm not on auto-renew because I don't have a checking account open at present. Last year I went a few months without renewing also because I was short on cash... but I'll be renewing when I can.

In the great scheme of things, changing someone's posting name seems to me to be sort of a favor. Given the things that they have done for us (revamping the site, giving us back images in posts, and that pretty awesome database of game related info on about a dozen games), I'd live with a name I'm not thrilled with.

But, hey, that's just me. We all have to pick our battles.

Srsly. I was SamiraX for about two years after the switch from UBB - said my username was not available. Whatever, it didn't hurt me. One day I mentioned it and Danalog happened to see it and changed it for me.

TurinAlexander has always struck me as something of a whiny *****, though. /shrug

I don't see what all the backlash is about. If you are unhappy with a service then why continue paying for it?

You all make it seem like he should be grateful that the admins are even giving him the time of day. The reason they gave sounds plausible to me(especially about being short handed), but that doesn't change the fact that poor service shouldn't be rewarded.

If I go to McDonald's and they refuse to pump the ketchsup into my little cup for me so I can dip my fries, I don't refuse to ever go there again.

Except that name changes are done purely as a favor, and have nothing to do with the premium "service".

So yeah, TurinAlexander should be.

I think the point you're all (or almost) missing is that he got no replies from the dev, AT ALL. A "Not right now, we're having problems and will do it later" could've been enough. Getting no answer, however, IS poor service for a paying customer, whether the service they're asking for is a favor or not. Turin should have gotten at least a reply.

If he PM'd him, that's prob the reason he never got a reply. Can you imagine how many PM's those guys get? Alla doesn't even check his/read them or reply. I do not know if he emailed him or not. I am done with this thread though...

It's not the job of ANY of the programmers to read PMs from posters or respond to them. When you have a userbase with a million and a half members, and probably more than half of them using the site with some regularity (just a guess), there is a good chance that the handful of people who keep the whole thing running receive more messages (probably many of them inane repeats or spam) than they can be bothered to care about if they are to do their job. The feedback forum exists so that issues that do pertain to their jobs can be reported. Any additional projects are probably assigned through a specific process (like posting on the admin forum, email or chat with other employees).

When I worked for Gateway, we had about 20 people to answer any letters that came in each day. Some days, there weren't that many, but other days, we got slammed. Each type of letter (complaints, charge disputes, rebates, people threatening lawsuits, etc.) went to a specific person who was assigned to work that particular type of issue. I often spoke with angry people asking why I was calling them if they had addressed their letter to the CEO or this or that VP. The answer was simple. It wasn't their job to respond to it, and if they were to do so to each letter addressed to them, they wouldn't have time to do their own jobs. Sometimes we would work with these people for a day, other times I can remember talking to the same person several items a day or week for a few months before resolving their issues, but rarely did anything actually get passed on to the person they wanted to speak with.

The interesting thing about this is shown here:

The only things the premium service covers are listed on the Premium Membership Benefits page. Name changes have ALWAYS been done on a whim. Custom titles also used to only be made on a whim. The powers that be felt that custom titles at 10,000 posts was a fun reward, but it's not a system set in stone. I should point out that Turin's wish to change his posting name is probably not without sympathy as Angsty was one of the first people to receive a name change (that I am aware of) See thread: Hello Admins.

Waiting can be tough, especially if you think no one is paying attention, but whining doesn't always do much to help. Even if Niz didn't see Turin's PM, I'm sure the request is well documented now, so if something comes of it, good... if not, well, at least he tried.

Well it seems devs don't read threads that have admin replies already, they think it's taken care of. So in my Ms. Crankypants attitude that I developed this afternoon after learning that little bit of information, I decided to take matters into my own hands... Kao and I are playing devs to see what we can do.

Nice! Just shows who wears the pants around here.Smiley: grin

Grats Turin.

EDIT: I see he was just using the default journal name. Will logging out and back in change it or will he need to manually rename it?

Name change check
Images check
Avatars check
Journal, no flipping clue, will test that when he gets off work later.

Thanks for the help Kao!

The above image (if it's actually there when I hit the button) is just a test, and has no other bearing on this topic.

On to the point then. First I'd like to thank both Darqflame, Kaolian, and anyone else I may not be aware of for their work on this issue. I really do appreciate your efforts on my behalf. Smiley: bowdown

Now the details. I logged out and then back in, and everything worked just fine. I did have to rename the Journal I never use (it turns out Anna said Hi to me a few months back, Hi Anna), but that's working now too. The avatars are present and working and if the above lolcat is in place, then everything is in tact. It seems like your experiment was a success. So once, thank you.
