No karma for OoT posts?Follow

#1 Aug 10 2009 at 8:36 PM Rating: Default
I'd like to preface this post with the fact that, while I may not have a huge post count like others do, I'm an old(ish) poster who's been watching this forum since 2003.

So the OoT has been warned a few times in the recent past about how it treats new posters. The Asylum was made for more "flavorful" posts, etc. etc., we all know how that story goes. I know I'm not one of the OoT or Asylum elite, but I am a long-time reader, so I figured I'd extend this suggestion here to see what the locals have to say about it.

Why not make it so ratings in off-topic forums don't apply to a poster's karma score? For those who care about karma (read as: anyone posting as scholar or lower) this would provide a large incentive to get involved with the community on a more personal level. Even if their posts get sub-d'd or unrated in the off topic forums, it wouldn't effect their overall karma score.

As far as I see it, the point of the karma score system is to point out posters who post beneficial/good/useful information on the games related within the Allakhazam forums, while those who post stupid, nonsensical posts -- in the main gaming forums -- get red arrowed and have their karma score lowered. This system would also get rid of any circle-jerking rate ups that might happen in random +1 threads in those forums.

The only posts that should affect karma, in my opinion, are those that have to do with game-related subjects. Posts in the Out of Topic and Asylum forums, along with maybe the multimedia, site feedback, and any other off-gaming-topic forums, shouldn't affect karma.

So that's my proposal. Make the karma score system only affect the scores of those posting in the main gaming forums, while posts in the Out of Topic and Asylum can still get sub-d'd/unrated without affecting the posters karma score.

No. Both forums really aren't all that difficult to avoid getting "nuked" in. Read the topics, offer opinions - even if it is contrary, so long as it is pretty well written, you'll be fine.

If you go in threatening people, making random links that look suspiciously like a keylogger, violate forum rules - you probably will get a few red arrows just like you would in the gaming forums. (who appear to be far more karma sensitive than we are)

Karma doesn't prevent you from posting. if you want to participate in any forum, do it.

Well, that is how it should have been. Unfortunately things are not really that perfect in my opinion.

Right now if you happen to disagree with someone, regardless of how well it's written, commented or how right you are, the ones who disagree with you will rate you down. Infact, rating down happens not just for reasons related to that one post, often times it happens over another post you made some time ago.

It's basic human nature i'm afraid. Plus it comes with the age group we're currently involved with on this forum. I'm of the same opinion as the OP. Right now valid suggestions get defaulted or lower, and calling someone a troll and bashing him gets rewarded with Excellents. If the ratings cannot be controlled decently enough, as in friends rating friends, and socks rating 20 post Guru's, then perhaps there need to be some minor changes here or there.

Perhaps actual ratings need to be restricted to just the FFXI Feedback forum. Perhaps the only place where it truly matters if a suggestion is good or bad.

Or perhaps Scholar, Guru and Sage just need to be dependant on how long you have been a member, and all posts should simply start at Decent with their ratings independant on one another.

I feel that without people rating each other into oblivion or having to fight to make what you say stay visible to most others, we can engage in more decent conversations without the whole need to bash others for not agreeing with you.

I like how the karma system works as it is. Sure, campers can make posting life a pain, but admins are generally quick to address these issues.

If rating's did not actually matter in the OOT/Asylum, what would be the point in the rate system? If I could post whatever I wanted, entertaining or not, helpful or not, legible or not, and I know that the ratings I recieve on posts do not actually affect me, what's stopping me from posting the same garbage over and over again?

I know it's easy to think of the OOT and other Cross-site forums as nothing but places to waste time, and they are most of the time, but the same can be said of any forum on Zam.com

Usually, the only posts to get rated down in the gaming forums, are ones that have an abrasive attitude, obviously trolling, and/or unhelpful. In the OOT, posts usually get rated down for being repetive, bringing old news, being illegible, and/or lashing out at another poster for no particular reason.

Basically, the rating system rarely ever plays any part in a decent conversation.

Change your filter settings to "Never Filter." If a post gets all the way down to "Unrated," it probably deserves it.

Did you even read what he wrote?

You: Zam needs to have an option to remove the filter so we can see all posts!
Him: Just turn it to Never Filter, then only the "unrated" posts get filtered.

Unrated is as good as a nuke, and only the trolls ever get that low.

Yeah bro, you have some selfish desire to see nuked posts, that often contain direct links to viruses, keyloggers, extremely offensive **** like tubgirl, spam, rmt adds, "ZOMG fill out my 1st semester grad school survey please" posts, posts detailing sensitive personal information, as well as extremely unsavory folks that **** and **** all over the place. Now why you have that desire, I don't know, but that's the only possible desire you could harbour for wanting to see the unrated stuff.

Sanitized for your convenience.

Just assume I reiterated that it takes many many rate-downs to get to "Unrated," even for someone starting out Default or even Sub-D. Therefore, it's a safe assumption that while some posts surely get undeservedly rated down, the ones that fall below the Sub-D filter generally have no redeeming value.
