Filter error/problemFollow

#1 Oct 20 2009 at 3:20 PM Rating: Decent
When trying to link this page(http://user pages .umbc. edu/ ~rshaw1/ gorgets.html ) without the spaces, the filter filters the website to http://userMy hovercraft is full of eelss.html . I was wondering if there was a way to circumvent this, or something I dunno. Or nothing. It's mostly a small inconvenience at this point.

Blame Hellboy for that one.

Or really, blame me, I put in that filter.

Somebody else must fix it now!

You're being caught by a filter which was put in place years ago to prevent spamming of a then favourite meme.

People still try to spam it from time to time, so it needs to stay in place. I could change the filter so your url would work, but then the spamming could begin again once someone figures out a work around.

I don't understand the issue though. Infact, people now instead spam the filtered result. So basically you've just gone from the Page "Get" spam to Hovercraft spam. Every case where they would be spamming the original, they are instead spamming the new.

Really, I'd say just get rid of (most) of the word filters, and if memes start being a problem again, people will report them (at which point a public appearance + smackdown would be appropriate).

At least the word filters aren't as overzealous as some games' are (where they ignore spaces thrown in as well)...

There's already a work-around which nobody is using just for this meme.

Actually, in retrospect, this is possibly the only meme immune to the filter. But really, I don't think it's such a huge issue anymore.

There's at least one way to get around it, but it doesn't work for links (which makes it harder to get around than a certain "monk it*m" wordfilter).

Unicode is (sometimes) your friend.

Don't play free realms then, it's insane how bad the filters are.

Keep in mind that I do play Maple Story on occasion... and "whisper me" gets wordfiltered to "whi**** *e" there...

Stupid filter is stupid. Wasn't it implemented to prevent stuff like My hovercraft is full of eels?

Couldn't the filter be modified to match /My hovercraft is full of eels/gi (regex in javascript form, example only) which would match My hovercraft is full of eels all the way through My hovercraft is full of eels? Would still allow the link in the OP and prevent the meme spammage. Filters should be as tight as possible and extended as needed. Sweeping the oceans for tuna with unnecessarily large nets kills dolphins. Sweeping the forum with unnecessarily large filters kills posts.

Smiley: frown

Ahh **** it. Stupid filter is stupid.
