Whats with the recent boost in lockings/deletings?Follow

Why suddenly are more posts being deleted and topics locked?

Or more to the point: Why is there no explanation about why? A lot of topics seem to now be locked for no apparant reason, whereas before there would always be a post saying "this is getting out of hand, I'm locking it". Why'd that stop? We not worth your time for an explanation?

Similarly with deleted posts. Why are posts suddenly being deleted that wouldn't have a few months ago, and more importantly, why, again, is there no explanation?

If you can reference the specific posts, I'll see if I can shed some light on it.

Regarding locking and deleating, in most of the forums the rates are aboutt he same. Posts in feedback get locked when they are "done" so there are obviously more locked posts in here, but generally I haven't locked or deleted any more posts than usual, and I don't see that any of the rest of the admins have locked an appriciable number above the norm.

If posts get rated down below 2.00 karma, they go sub default, and depending on how you ahve your filter set, you may not see them. The default filter settings display only default rated posts and higher. Set your filter to "never filter" if you wish to see all of them.

Regarding an explanation for a locked post, if it is something blatantly obvious, I sometimes won't list a reason. Usually make a post about the reason, then lock the thread, or put it in the edit command. The lock post functionality was recently changed though to make it so an edit isn't strictly required, which may lead to less people putting a description.

If I admin delete a thread, it's either a duplicate thread, or one that really shouldn't have been there. If its borderline and i delete it anyways I usually PM the user who posted it.

Which specific threads are you referring to?

A bunch of posts in =10 have been getting deleted. Some i could almost understand, but others i can't even imagine why.

Only example i can think of+find atm is http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/forum.html?forum=10;mid=126271002731983234, both the thread, and one of noodles's posts got deleted. I can understand the thread getting locked, but deleting it seems like overkill to me, and i also don't see why noodles's post was deleted either.

is another example of a =10 topic, locked for no apparant reason.

Well, a reason could be "the topic was finished, there wasn't any more need for discussion", but in that case, what about the hundreds or thousands of other "finished" topics?
If it was full of violent flaming then I might understand it, but it wasn't perticularly aweful. It certainly didn't justify a lock without at least an admin stating "this is getting out of hand" or something first.

I suspect the locked thread you listed was locked mostly due to preludes post and a complaint regarding it. I will find out for sure though. I probably wouldn't have locked it personally, but there may be circumstances I am unaware of.

There are 6 deleted threads on the front page of = 10, and 4 more on the second page. 8 of those threads belong to this banned user: https://everquest.allakhazam.com/poster.html?user=1757171 who was a sockpuppet for This banned user:
https://everquest.allakhazam.com/poster.html?user=1587072

Who was banned for "Racist, and really disturbing pro rape posts." according to the notes field. I banned the origional account myself. As the last topic the sockpuppet account posted was "whats a negro lot?" I am quite certain that is not a poster we need active in FFXI main.

Banning an account immidiatly deletes all posts associated with that account, including new topics. There were also several gilseller threads deleted in there.

Regarding the post you linked ThePsychoticOne, the thread itself was one of the posts made by the banned user listed above. The post inside that by noodles that was deleted was deleted because it was somewhat less than welcoming to new posters. At the time it was posted noodles could not have known that it was a sockpuppet about to be banned, and had it been an actual new poster, comments like that can tend to make them uncomfortable and stop posting. I concur with the deletion of that post. The bottom line is the FFXI forum, like most of the forums around here is losing mainstay members faster than they can be replaced. We are very comitted to bringing in new people to maintain the forum at a level where it can sustain its own rythem of posts and replies and not slowly dwindle away.

In this case, since it was a sockpuppet, it didn't matter in the end.

For the record, I was fairly sure it was a troll, which is why I made the post. I'm actually surprisingly helpful to genuine newcomers.

I didn't know that all topics started, even if unrelated were deleted too if an account was deleted. That sheds quite some light on things, thanks.

Yeah. We have 2 levels available. Mute, which just locks the account but leaves the posts intact, and full Ban which deletes all posts, PM's etc. Basically everything except wiki edits, and those only stay because of the logistics of removing them become complicated. Ban is the more permanant of the two options and we are more hesitant to use it. Given the previous comments of the origional account, thats one where you really don't want to have missed anything, so Ban was most definitly appropriate there.

The topic in question, I had personally locked not just because the question had been answered (but it had a small part in the matter), but primarily because of the flaming and trolling that was going on.

In the future though, I'll try to make a more conscious effort to leave a post at the end of any topic I lock explaining why.
