Was over reading the official Rift forums and it seems that many people are already getting hacked in that game. They also seem to have a theory that ZAM is responsible for all the phishing emails they are receiving.

People are idiots. And paranoid.

Thomas Hobbes, in his book Leviathan (1651), presents the theory that mankind is a selfish and savage race, prone to isolation and defending the territory against any intruders. Of course, John Locke criticized Hobbes' theory, saying mankind was compassionate and reasonable.

To be honest, though, I think Hobbes nailed it.

If people are being invaded they lash out against the nearest target. Doesn't matter if that target was the cause of the invasion or not. It's even better if they can create some kind of conspiracy. Like ZAM being affiliated with IGE years back and thus must be corrupt and evil as well. They completely ignore the fact that ZAM started out as a fansite company and remains just that to this day. ZAM never became IGE, they were just in the same umbrella corporation.

People are idiots.

My novelist email account, which has never been used for any forum related to gaming whatsoever, has received phishing emails for Rift.

My main email account has a ton of WoW ones, but not a Rift one.

Neither have received any for FFXI, which is the game I actually play.

My novelist account doesn't get spam either, but then again, I don't pretend to be a novelist.
